Globally, aviation accounts for around 3.5% of the total human contribution to climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimate that this will increase to between 5% and 15% by 2050. In the UK, the Department For Transport calculates CO2 emissions from international and domestic aviation as being 37.5 million tonnes in 2005, i.e. 6.4% of the UK's total.

We believe growth of aviation and avoiding the impacts of climate change can both be achieved through technological advances, low carbon fuels and more efficient operations. Where BAA has direct control over emissions, it aims to lead the airport industry in managing them. Where there is no direct control, such as over emissions from flights, BAA uses its influence to encourage the airline industry and policy makers to tackle climate change.

BAA actively supports the reduction of waste and encourages recycling, helping to reduce landfill costs, minimise consumption of non-renewable resources and limit carbon emissions. Hazardous waste must be disposed of appropriately, to avoid damage to the environment.

Ferrovial Aeropuertos is aware that its airport operations and developments increase pressure on local water supplies, produce noise and waste, and thus develops plans to minimize these impacts.
