The King officially opens the Marqués de Riscal Hotel in the City of Wine

The Marqués de Riscal hotel, designed by the Canadian architect Frank Gehry and constructed by Ferrovial Agroman, located in these winemakers’ City of Wine, in the Alava town of Elciego, was officially opened on October 10th by His Majesty King Juan Carlos. In this small town in the province of Alava, where the Marqués de Riscal wine cellars have been established since 1860, Gehry designed a building with his identifying hallmark: a titanium outer coating describing undulating shapes. It is reminiscent of the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, also constructed by Ferrovial, but this time Gehry used earthy tones and the emblematic colors of the company: titanium pink (alluding to red wine), gold (the mesh wrapping on the Riscal wine bottles) and silver (the foil wrap sealing the cork). The facilities cover a surface area of nearly 100,000 square meters where the 14-bedroom exclusive hotel is located.

In addition to these luxury chambers, a further 26 have been added inside an adjoining building. The hotel is also equipped with a Spa which bases treatment on wine and wine derivatives, and a restaurant managed by the Rioja-born chef Francis Paniego. In Gehry’s own words, this building was a great architectural and constructive challenge whilst also being one of the most ambitious projects embarked upon among those carried out by Spanish wine cellars to date.
