Electronic Toll Collection

Utilized on Spanish highways for over 10 years now, electronic toll collection applies radio frequency technology to facilitate toll payment without any human intervention or the need to stop the vehicle.

Automatic toll systems implemented in Europe, Southeast Asia and the USA are based on aerial receivers and radio frequency transmitters, which are able to read from a distance small devices known as transponders in which user information, including bank account or credit card details, has been recorded and possibly data on the current trip (entry station, vehicle classification, etc.).

Ausol

Since it began operating in 1999, AUSOL (Málaga-Estepona) has implemented toll collection systems based on the European CEN-278 regulation that are completely integrated into the operating control systems. Both projects use specific automatic toll collection equipment which has been integrated into the conventional machinery by the concessionaire's technical personnel.

407ETR: Open Access Tolling

Toronto's 407 ETR system is the first fully electronic open access toll system in the world, characterized by the fact that there is no conventional tolling stations (such as toll areas, cabins, islands, station buildings) and that no vehicle needs to stop in order to pay the fee. Designed and built by the Ontario Provincial Authority, the 407 ETR tender was awarded in 1999 to a consortium led by Cintra. One of the main aspects of the new management of the 407ETR highway is the extension, improvement and constant adaptation of the automatic toll electronic equipment and computer systems associated with the toll (image management, customers and billing, user support and assistance systems) in order to increase performance and optimize the service. This emphasis on applying the most advanced technologies to the system have ensured that the 407 ETR is still the most advanced toll highway in the world.
