Traffic Control

Highways are being equipped with new systems and electronic equipment using the latest information technology applications in order to optimize operation and extend the scope of services provided by concessionaires to users.

For several years now, traffic control centers have been implemented particularly in tunnels, on bridges and in specific points along highways (viaducts, junctions). Video cameras or real time digital photographs are used for visual surveillance. Control centers are completed with centralized communications (telephone, radio, emergency assistance posts for users) weather station data and weight and measurement points, as well as charts of the highway route indicating the state of the systems.

User information systems are managed from the control centers, such as variable signage panels or radio stations which constantly provide information on the state of the highway and any traffic incidents. Through electronic signaling from the control centre it is possible to open and close lanes, provide signs for obstacles and regulate speed. Various concessions have installed beacons and barriers which are operated automatically from the control center in order to fence off accidents or to assist in maintenance activities.

However, the application of these technologies to traffic and transport is still in its infancy. In the immediate future, implementation of location systems and management of fleets of vehicles with the assistance of GPS and mobile telephone will become generalised, along with systems which will inform users of traffic incidents, weather updates and the best route to choose using equipment installed in their vehicles.

Experiments are also being carried out on automatic guidance systems which will enable highway users to drive “on automatic pilot” with every guarantee of safety.

The 407 ETR control center in Toronto is exemplary in terms of its traffic control systems and computer applications designed to serve highway users.

In all the concessions in which CINTRA is involved, particularly in new projects, the latest traffic control and operating management systems have been implemented.
