Intelligent Highways

Cintra’s aim is to develop highways that will improve the lives of the thousands of users who travel daily on the 2,900 km managed by the company.

With this in mind, the company strives to be a leader in developing new technologies, and has adapted highways to users' needs by creating intelligent infrastructure.

Traffic Control Systems

The new challenge faced in operating and controlling traffic is to implement Control Systems which will enable concessionaries to monitor all the information available and expand user services.

These include tasks such as handling of the information systems for the user from the control centres, opening and closing lanes, signaling obstacles and regulating speed. For example, the control centre of Toronto’s 407 ETR has improved traffic in an area of harsh winters and difficult weather conditions.

Cintra implements the very latest traffic control systems in all their concessions.

Managed Lanes

These projects are designed to alleviate traffic congestion in densely populated urban areas, where the construction of new roads is not a viable option. They include maintenance and remodeling of existing lanes which will be free of charge, and the construction of additional tolled lanes with a barrier-free, fully electronic toll system. The tenders recently awarded for the NTE and the LBJ Express highways are two clear examples of Cintra’s leading role in developing this type of contract.

Automatic Tolls

Automatic toll roads are becoming increasingly prevalent throughout the world. They provide a means of lightening the traffic load on toll roads by permitting habitual road users access without having to stop their vehicle to pay the toll. The 407 ETR in Toronto, Canada, is the first system in the world with a totally electronic toll system.

Shadow Tolls

This type of toll enables users to make the most of a toll road almost without noticing they are doing so. In this type of highway concession, the Government Administration pays the concessionaire directly, depending on the volume of traffic and other operating parameters such as level of service, times of heavy traffic or availability of lanes.
