In order to evaluate the environmental performance in real time, Ferrovial has designed the Environmental Performance Index (EPI). This clear, concise graphic index compiles all the information regarding the company's environmental management since 1996. The EPI concept is unprecedented in the construction industry. The quantitative information provided makes it possible to analyze the causes of variations and make informed decisions in the area of environmental management.
Environmental data collected daily from the production centers are integrated into Ferrovial's Environmental Performance Index (EPI), which is the first environmental performance index for construction activities in the world.
This EPI has become a useful tool for taking decisions at executive level, since it provides reliable quantitative information about the environmental performance of the construction business. The EPI algorithm was validated by Rey Juan Carlos University and is supported institutionally by the UNESCO Chair of Environment.
This index is built on information generated by the environmental management system and includes variables such as the environmental performance at construction sites, environmental objectives and compliance with applicable legislation, as well as the amount of penalties imposed.
The EPI is available at Ferrovial's Environment web site and is updated on a monthly and daily basis.
Following the validation of the mathematical algorithm by the UNESCO Chair at the Rey Juan Carlos University, the functional tests on the software application that supports EPI were completed. The software provides support both in the field and for environmental assessments and environmental risk estimates, and can also be used for consultation thanks to the implementation of remote access to obtain reports and listings with multiple filter options.
The EPI figures can be calculated for the individual companies (Cespa, Eurolimp, Ferrovial Infrastructuras and Ferroser), or grouped and weighted to obtain an overall value for Ferrovial Servicios.
The EPI for the Services area has now been established. In production, it has generated validated information for 2009 and 2010.
