The treatment is designed to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) resulting from thermal drying of leachate in the controlled tanks of Santa María de Palautordera and Els Hostalets de Pierola (Barcelona). This process, which is the first of its kind in Spain, reduces the nuisance of bad smells prevalent in this type of installation.
Regenerative thermal oxidation submits these gases to a temperature and residence time which ensures that they are totally destroyed while permitting energy to be recovered for the drying of concentrated leachate following treatment. Furthermore, the process uses very little energy and thus it is suggested as an alternative to conventional treatment with extremely reduced environmental costs.
This treatment is designed to remove SH2, one of the most aggressive components of biogas. The system is in its experimental phase and is based on biogas circulation through a contact surface with bacterial cultures under controlled humidity conditions and provision of nutrients. Performance of the system can reach values of between 90-95%.
