We owe them our lives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Oblivious to the world of construction in its more general and versatile aspects, most of us only see the so-called <em>factory<\/em> architecture: bricks <a title=\"Architects and engineers thanks to a lego building block - Ferrovial Blog\" href=\"\/?p=16744\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow\"> <strong>piled up one on top of the other like Lego blocks <\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0within a concrete skeleton<\/strong>. But you only have to get up close enough to become aware of some of the elements of construction which are crucial for any structure.<\/p>\n<p>Elements which have gone unnoticed as construction standards have concentrated on specific materials and building methods. Elements without which we would not have reached the modern technological level we\u2019re now at, and the use of which is still prevalent all around us.<\/p>\n<h2>Rope and bamboo bridges and scaffolding<\/h2>\n<p>Although we\u2019re not used to bamboo here in the West \u2013probably because it does not grow wild around us\u2013 it\u2019s a fact that <strong>half the world uses bamboo<\/strong> both as a building material (in bridges, boats, trusses or watchtowers, for example) and as a construction aid (primarily in scaffolding).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18774\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/01\/13154104\/building-in-hong-kong-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18774\" class=\"wp-image-18774\" title=\"building in hong kong\" src=\"https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/01\/13154104\/building-in-hong-kong-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"building in hong kong\" width=\"550\" height=\"413\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18774\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bamboo scaffolding in Tsuen Wan (Hong Kong), 2007. It has just the right degree of flexibility and an almost ideal hardness, and it works well under any type of load. Jenny Garz\u00f3n bridge (right)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Although its durability might be called into question in our Western world of concrete and steel, it is comparable to that of some wooden bridges and houses which still exist in Europe today. Some of these structures are centuries old. An age-old example, which is still in use today, are the rope joints in scaffolding in cities such as Hong Kong (see photo further up), or the building of <a title=\"El Caballito de Totora - Kuntur\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kuntur.de\/mit-kuntur-unterwegs\/artikel\/el-caballito-de-totora--patrimonio-cultural-del-peru--\/id\/15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow\"> totora reed boats<\/a> by Peruvian fishermen.<\/p>\n<h2>Trusses, wheels, cogs and machines<\/h2>\n<p>As I was saying, in the West <strong>we are more used to felling trees for construction<\/strong> \u2013at least in previous centuries. Source: <a title=\"Catedu.es\" href=\"http:\/\/catedu.es\/aragonromano\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow\"> Catedu.es<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Perhaps the invention which brought together all the technology associated with wood \u2013trusses for supporting loads, wheels for movement, cogs for controlling speeds, and even potential energy accumulators\u2013 were the <strong>covered \u201csiege machines\u201d<\/strong> made by the Romans. But we are not alone.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the world owes even more to the Romans\u2019 thirst for destruction. Elements which usually go unobserved in buildings, but without which we wouldn\u2019t have the level of comfort we enjoy today, derive almost directly (some with very few modifications) from Roman military machines. Examples of these are the lifting mechanism in elevators or in suspended platforms used in maintenance, where only the materials (steel struts and twisted polymer cables instead of rope) and the traction used (from horsepower to steam, diesel and electricity) have been changed to adapt them to our modern world.<\/p>\n<h2>Bearings, welds and metals<\/h2>\n<p>Although metals have been around for thousands of years, it was not until 1850 that they really began to be used in absolutely everything. From being used almost exclusively for tools, metals jumped over to construction, from beams to industrial machinery, trains to entire buildings. If rivets were what put 19th century buildings together, metal components today are joined by welding. From the beams making up the skeleton of the building in which you are sitting right now \u2013joined by welding\u2013, to the large telecommunications towers on which the internet signal you need to read this depends.<\/p>\n<p>If you work in industrial premises, you will be able to see many welding seams, especially on ceilings where the trusses join the columns. It is also very likely that you will have seen bearings on the ends of handholds in buses and carriages (photo on the left). However, they are most important for earthquake-resistant buildings (<a title=\"titulo de enlace\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arquitecturaenacero.org\/uso-y-aplicaciones-del-acero\/soluciones-constructivas\/union-anti-sismo-som\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow\"> fig. 1 and fig. 10<\/a>). Without this type of joints, many structures would collapse in on themselves due to internal tensions, as would many constructions lacking expansion joints.<\/p>\n<h2>Traction architecture: braid bridges, tensed concrete and chains<\/h2>\n<p>This type of architecture is very visible, but we tend to overlook the role that certain materials and ways of building play in it. We mentioned lifts earlier on in relation to the pulleys and other mechanisms they use; now we\u2019ll go back to them for a look at the cables used for lifting, cables which are not very different from those used for pre-tensioning concrete <a title=\"How gargoyles and pinnacles saved gothic architecture - Ferrovial Blog\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/blog\/en\/2016\/11\/how-gargoyles-and-pinnacles-saved-gothic-architecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow\"> so that it always works under compression<\/a> (or squashed). What we now solve with a crane used to require a large wooden lattice structure and chains in the old days.
