However, much has changed since the <a title=\"Eupalinos Tunnel\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eupalinos-tunnel.gr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">engineer Eupalinos<\/a> built what is considered to be one of the first tunnels in history \u2013 an underground passage over a kilometre in length on the Greek island of Samos \u2013 in the 6<sup>th<\/sup> century B.C. Today, technical and technological developments allow us to talk of <strong>tunnels which cross the seas<\/strong>, such as the 50 km-long English Channel, or <strong>join continents<\/strong>, such as the tunnel of Marmaray, in Istanbul. But just how do you go about building such massive projects? Engineer <a title=\"Juan Carlos Guerra Torralbo - Linkedin\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/juancarlosguerratorralbo\/?ppe=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Juan Carlos Guerra Torralbo, <\/a>Head of Geotechnical Projects at <a title=\"Construction - Ferrovial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/en\/business-lines\/construction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener noreferrer\">Ferrovial Agroman,<\/a> promises no easy facts, but does provide a lot of answers in his recently published <em>Manual de procedimientos constructivos de t\u00faneles<\/em> (Manual on tunnel construction processes). So, <strong>in addition to science, building tunnels involves a bit of art<\/strong>. And a lot of prior experience.<\/p>\r\n<h3>How is the route design phase?<\/h3>\r\n<p>\u201cIt is rare that an opinion can be voiced, from a tunnelling point of view, at the route design phase of the project. Routes are usually chosen and decided on based on other criteria\u201d, says Guerra Torralbo. And here is where art steps in. \u201cThe chosen route usually has to be accepted, and then the <strong>most appropriate construction solution<\/strong> must be applied to ensure success.\u201d There are many factors which may make complying with the chosen route more complicated, nonetheless there are two elements which may really put the whole project at risk: <strong>unexpected presence of water or gas<\/strong>. \u201cThe presence of large volumes of water at the tunnel mouth can cause instability, risk of collapse, landslides\u2026\u201d the engineer points out. Classical building methods, where workers directly access the tunnel opening, are the best way of solving this problem. <strong>The presence of large tunnel boring machines (TBMs) in such cases is an added problem.<\/strong> \u201cGenerally, such complications must be detected and solved before large volumes of water can get into the tunnel,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_22399\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/09\/13152218\/tunnel-construction-ALCOY-e1504515538806.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22399\" class=\"wp-image-22399 size-full\" title=\"tunnel construction ALCOY\" src=\"https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/09\/13152218\/tunnel-construction-ALCOY-e1504515538806.jpg\" alt=\"Tunnels at the Barranco de la Batalla. Alcoy (Alicante, Spain)<\/em><\/p><\/div>\r\n<p>Gas, for its part, whether flammable or not, may put health and safety at risk in the tunnel, and regulations are becoming increasingly stringent. \u201cConstruction of the Abdalaj\u00eds tunnels (which are over 7\u00a0km long) on the C\u00f3rdoba-M\u00e1laga high-speed rail link required boring through complex geological formations, and excavation works were affected by the presence of methane, something which had apparently not been foreseen at the project stage\u201d, explains Guerra Torralbo. The real problem arose when the <strong>TBMs, which were fitted with gas detectors, stopped as soon as the concentrations of gas went over a certain threshold<\/strong>. \u201cThis was at odds with existing recommendations when boring through soft soils, which specifically recommend not stopping the machines in order to get through such areas as quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<h3>How are supports and lining?<\/h3>\r\n<p>The design of supports and linings depends on the construction method chosen for building the tunnel, as well as on a knowledge of the ground. While support is critical for maintaining the infrastructure, the use of certain <strong>linings is sometimes called into question<\/strong>, as this can be influenced by other factors, such as reasons of aesthetics or aerodynamics (for example in high-speed rail lines). However, some terrains also make linings essential. \u201cA different approach must be taken in areas of expansive terrain, where changes in humidity make the ground expand and exert pressure on the lining,\u201d explains Guerra Torralbo. \u201cIn such cases, strongly armoured lining sections must be used.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/09\/13152207\/tunnel-construction-megatunnels1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22428\" src=\"https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/09\/13152207\/tunnel-construction-megatunnels1.jpg\" alt=\"Construction of megatunnels\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/09\/13152207\/tunnel-construction-megatunnels1.jpg 567w, https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/09\/13152207\/tunnel-construction-megatunnels1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<h3><strong>Choosing the tunnel construction process<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p>In a world where technological advances seem to dominate everything, it may appear surprising that <strong>some methods of tunnel boring have barely changed over the past 200 years<\/strong>. These are the so-called classical methods, still frequently used in urban settings, of which the Belgian or German methods are some examples. Such methods, which involve <strong>workers digging with picks and shovels<\/strong>, \u201crequire teams of highly qualified and experienced persons. Today, when the trend is for such traditional occupations to disappear as a result of mechanisation, specialist tunnel borers have to be trained by the actual construction companies\u201d, says Guerra Torralbo. And how is it possible that such tunnelling artists survive in today\u2019s day and age? The reason is that, <strong>contrary to what might be expected, they are competitive regarding costs<\/strong>. \u201cWhen you commission a TBM, 12 to 15 months may go by before it is assembled and ready to go. Which means that when deciding to buy or rent one of these machines, a large number of criteria must be taken into account.<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li><strong>Geology<\/strong>. Both for soft ground and for rock, available information on factors such as permeability and pressure must be as detailed as possible.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Range of TBMs available<\/strong>. \u201cThe time taken for building and on-site assembly of a TBM is rarely less than a year; this is enough time for excavating shorter tunnels using classical methods\u201d, explains Guerra Torralbo.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Length and diameter of the tunnel.<\/strong> \u201cFor tunnels of more than 4.5 km and a regular section, a TBM is the most cost-efficient option\u201d, he says.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Layout and elevation of the tunnel<\/strong>. Numerous factors come into play here, such as the need to include auxiliary high capacity earth and rubble removal machinery (TBMs create a lot of waste material!), the diameter of the tunnel (complications could arise in tunnels with diameters of less than 5\u00a0metres) or its slope. \u201cTBMs work best at slopes of less than 5%. They can be used on slopes of up to 20%, provided they work upwards\u201d, explains Juan Carlos Guerra.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h3><strong>The art of experience<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p>It is impossible to summarise a manual of 500-plus pages, in itself already rather condensed, in just one article. Many issues have gone unmentioned, such as the all-important mouth of the tunnel, where construction begins, or the systems used for monitoring excavation, known as auscultation. But even more difficult to reflect in an article are Juan Carlos Guerra Torralbo\u00b4s 28 years of experience in the building of tunnels. An experience he himself has tried to condense in his <strong><em>Manual de procedimientos constructivos de t\u00faneles<\/em>,<\/strong> driven by the desire to share his knowledge. \u201cNot everything can be found in the Manual. It is no magic balsam of Fierabr\u00e1s for soothing Don Quixote\u2019s ailments,\u201d says the engineer. \u201cEmpirical rules and recommendations for selecting the most appropriate construction method for a <strong>tunnel should never supplant engineering criteria, or indeed professional experience.\u201d<\/strong> It may well be essential to have a sound knowledge of the theory involved, but, as Guerra Torralbo said at the start, there is also <strong>a bit of art involved in the building of tunnels.<\/strong> \u201cYears of experience have taught me to be wary of miracle methods where problems solve themselves, to recall what has worked on previous occasions for similar tunnels, to consider different options within the wide range of methods available on the market and, above all, to allow changes in the method used if they are properly justified.\u201d<\/p><p><em>An article by Juan Samaniego<\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Man has spent tens of thousands of years trying to change the planet at will, to greater or lesser success.
