With more than\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">37 million falls globally each year<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0serious enough to require medical treatment, it\u2019s a risk we all face in our day-to-day lives, at work and at home.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In our industry, there are risks at all levels. Quite literally.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Not only are there risks at surface level, but below ground too, in shafts and other underground structures. And, of course,\u00a0it\u2019s important\u00a0when working at height to control the equipment you are handling, with proper tethering, as this can also be a real danger.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Thankfully, there are lots of things we can do to eliminate or reduce these risks.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Measures we can take to make things a lot easier and safer.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These steps, from experience, can also help increase production and improve the quality of work on site. Only, of course, if people can fully focus on a task.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ferrovial.com\/en\/inforvial_article\/el-origen-de-los-epis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PPE<\/a> such as harnesses and fall restraint lanyards are an essential failsafe \u2013 but we shouldn\u2019t rely on them. People naturally don\u2019t think they are putting themselves at risk \u2013 either because they just don\u2019t see the\u00a0hazards\u00a0or they simply become complacent.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Encouraging people to have conversations within their teams<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0about how work is planned and how it\u2019s delivered it\u2019s also important.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In July, Ferrovial ran a global\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Working at Height Campaign<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in which employees were asked the following questions, to encourage them to identify risks and enhance communication between teams: What changes occurred between planning and delivery? What unforeseen risks and hazards emerged? What risk controls were overlooked and how did they improvise and modify actions along the way?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a result,\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">teams discussed what they could do differently or better<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which encouraged them to talk about the type of risks they face.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If we can make time to have these conversations at the right moment, we can then identify\u00a0adequate solutions\u00a0to protect us all. My team and I strongly believe the people doing the work have the\u00a0right ideas\u00a0and approaches. But it\u2019s not until conversations start to happen that potential risks begin to surface.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s important that conversations are not too long. Usually, short, engaged conversations, with active listening, have more of an impact than a long broadcast conversation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How to\u00a0organise an internal health and safety campaign?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How we rolled out this year\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Working at Height Campaign\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">can<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hopefully be a guide for those looking to arrange their own internal health and safety drive.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Firstly, the campaign was delivered in Spanish, English and Polish, to secure excellent buy-in from all levels in the organization,\u00a0and in\u00a0all the geographical areas where Ferrovial operates.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We used an operational director, rather than the health and safety team, to lead the campaign and encourage people to participate. This really helped the messages hit home.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We used Yammer, an internal communications platform, to build interest, asking staff to\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">post details of their conversations and share photos of their teams<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. People sharing their knowledge and experiences across the whole business through Yammer, helped increase the campaign\u2019s reach.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We connected with a lot of employees, with about\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">56,000 reads<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of the 100s of posts about the campaign. At the same time, we encouraged our leaders to engage with posts, to recognise teams\u2019 work and motivate them to keep up the good work.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Finally, we tried to keep paperwork and reporting to a minimum,\u00a0as\u00a0 we\u00a0didn\u2019t want it to be a burden or a bind<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. They told us it was\u00a0an\u00a0 \u2018interesting new format\u2019 for a health and safety campaign and was a great opportunity for employees to raise their voices, share experiences and opinions, identify risks and preventative measures and suggest ways to create a safer work environment.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0d8\" data-font=\"Wingdings\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Webber team on the FM-156 road project in Fort Worth, Texas, US, held a fall protection \u2018stand down\u2019, where staff renewed their commitment to personal safety at work and to promoting these values among colleagues.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0d8\" data-font=\"Wingdings\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">In Virginia, US, Tommie Callahan, Safety Manager of North Perimeter Contractors, told us his team had a \u2018very candid and enlightening\u2019 conversation, which was attended by the CEO, the executive construction manager and many senior project managers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Improving risk awareness through technology and human factor<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a team, we\u2019re always looking at innovative ways to improve health and safety training and awareness. We\u2019re lucky to have a lot of very clever people in our business &#8211; engineers, designers, project managers &#8211; who look at ways risk can be \u2018designed out\u2019 and reduce the time people are working at height.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To improve risk awareness, we\u2019re currently developing\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">virtual reality training<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. This stimulates participants&#8217; perception of hazards without exposure to harm and helps them practice applying controls to minimise danger. Trials should be done by the end of the year.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We\u2019re also looking at\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">human factors<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, including mental health and wellbeing and its effect on our safety at work. Family or financial pressures can take our minds to other places while on a job. This can lead to complacency, a lack of situational and risk awareness and bad decision making.
