Our world isn&#8217;t possible without energy; therefore, its storage has been one of the\u00a0significant challenges in recent history. Now in the midst of the <strong>energy transition<\/strong>, the decarbonization of electricity production, the challenge has resurfaced with a vengeance:\u00a0how\u00a0can we\u00a0store clean energy?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Our societies&#8217; electricity needs vary throughout the day with what is known as the <strong>demand curve.<\/strong> These needs don&#8217;t have any reason to coincide with energy generation in real-time, especially when we&#8217;re talking about renewable energies that depend on factors outside of our control, such as the sun or wind. In other words,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ree.es\/en\/red21\/a-leading-role-in-the-energy-transition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the production of renewable energy is more difficult to manage<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. To compensate for this, we have to store it better so that it&#8217;s available at the right time we need it.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;Encouraging the increase in energy storage capacity [&#8230;] will enable more integration of renewables, avoiding unwanted discharges of clean energy in valley periods, and at the same time will provide more security for the electrical system,&#8221; explains\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ree.es\/en\/red21\/energy-storage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Red El\u00e9ctrica de Espa\u00f1a<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the corporation that operates the national electricity grid in Spain. The storage and distribution of electrical energy so that it&#8217;s available when, where, and how it is needed is today&#8217;s big challenge for renewable energies. And the answer could be in cars.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>A future of big batteries?<\/strong><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the fight against climate change, the path\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/clima\/policies\/international\/negotiations\/paris_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">outlined by the Paris Agreement<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is clear: reducing greenhouse gas emissions must be a priority. To this end, many countries are committing to\u00a0decarbonizing their economy as much as possible. In other words, reducing the number of activities that generate CO2 and, above all, eliminating dependence on fossil fuels.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The so-called\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/energy-climate-change-environment\/implementation-eu-countries\/energy-and-climate-governance-and-reporting\/national-long-term-strategies_en\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">energy transition<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is a long-term strategy that seeks to eliminate emissions related to power generation. On the one hand, this means committing to renewables and stopping generating electricity through coal, oil, and gas. On the other, it is committing to the electrification of as many activities as possible, such as transportation and industry.<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-40968\" style=\"font-weight: bold; background-color: transparent; text-align: center;\" src=\"https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/09\/10134016\/vtg-paneles-solares.jpg\" alt=\"vtg-paneles-solares\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/09\/10134016\/vtg-paneles-solares.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/09\/10134016\/vtg-paneles-solares-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/09\/10134016\/vtg-paneles-solares-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/09\/10134016\/vtg-paneles-solares-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/09\/10134016\/vtg-paneles-solares-800x450.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Faced with this scenario and considering <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ree.es\/en\/red21\/energy-storage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">energy storage technologies<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that are currently available, countries are implementing different infrastructures to store electricity. In Spain, for example, the plan is to increase\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/elperiodicodelaenergia.com\/espana-tendra-que-aumentar-en-un-30-su-capacidad-de-almacenamiento-de-2030-a-2050-para-hacer-seguro-el-100-renovable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the reversible hydraulic power capacity<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(some\u00a0hydroelectric plants are capable of adding potential energy to water). Others, however, are going with building large batteries.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The United Kingdom currently has 1 GW of storage capacity for battery power; it is building structures to store another 1.3 GW and plans to increase\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/marketresearch.solarmedia.co.uk\/products\/uk-battery-storage-project-database-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the country&#8217;s total capacity to 13.5 GW<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. According to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2020\/jul\/14\/government-hopes-cut-in-red-tape-will-triple-uk-battery-capacity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the British government<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, these batteries will be necessary to regulate the distribution of the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/853886\/Queen_s_Speech_December_2019_-_background_briefing_notes.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">40 GW of offshore wind energy<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that will be generated from 2030 (enough to cover the needs of all households in the country).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But there are those who point out that perhaps none of these solutions is optimal. Perhaps the answer is in cars, motorcycles and trucks,\u00a0the electrification of the fleet,\u00a0and an innovative technology known\u00a0as vehicle-to-grid\u00a0(V2G).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The power of battery aggregation\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As countries progress in energy decarbonization, electricity generation&#8217;s weight in greenhouse gas emissions decreases. In the European Union as a whole, for example, emissions from electricity production and industry have fallen by more than <strong>30% since 1990<\/strong>, according to data from the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/data-and-maps\/daviz\/ghg-emissions-by-aggregated-sector-5#tab-dashboard-02\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">European Environment Agency<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The trend is even more pronounced in some European countries. In Spain, according to data from\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.miteco.gob.es\/es\/calidad-y-evaluacion-ambiental\/temas\/sistema-espanol-de-inventario-sei-\/notaresultadosavance2016-12dejulio2017_tcm30-421339.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, emissions related to power generation account for 18% of the total, while those from transportation account for 25%. And mobility, the transportation of people and goods, is\u00a0establishing\u00a0itself as the\u00a0lead\u00a0emitter of CO2 and other harmful gases as the transition progresses.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is why electrifying the fleet and, in particular, private vehicles, is the next big goal. This will generate a significant increase in the demand for electricity, but, at the same time, it could be a solution to the challenge of energy storage.<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-40970\" style=\"font-weight: bold; background-color: transparent; text-align: center;\" src=\"https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/09\/10134006\/vtg-vehiculos.jpg\" alt=\"vtg-vehiculos\" width=\"600\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/09\/10134006\/vtg-vehiculos.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/09\/10134006\/vtg-vehiculos-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/09\/10134006\/vtg-vehiculos-1024x627.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/09\/10134006\/vtg-vehiculos-768x470.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/09\/10134006\/vtg-vehiculos-800x490.jpg 800w, https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/09\/10134006\/vtg-vehiculos-294x180.jpg 294w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As Andrew Cruden of the University of Southampton points out in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-uk-plans-to-build-huge-batteries-to-store-renewable-energy-but-theres-a-much-cheaper-solution-143053\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">this article in The Conversation<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, when an electric vehicle equipped with V2G technology is charging, it is giving the electrical grid access to its battery. This means that if you have millions of connected vehicles, the electricity grid has a large storage capacity made up of millions of added batteries.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If the more than 38 million vehicles registered in the United Kingdom were electric, the researcher argues, the country would have a storage capacity of 220GW, much higher than the 13.5GW currently planned. And it would also accomplish this in a much more economical way.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Through vehicle-to-grid technology, vehicles function as temporary storage devices. They can be charged at times of low demand (such as at night) and used as a power source during times of high demand (if you don&#8217;t have to use them).
