San Salvador, one of the most populated cities in Central America, rises up from nature, home to more than half a million residents.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In June 2020, Tropical Storm Amanda\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/sponge-city-san-salvador-uses-nature-fight-floods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">hit the city<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, causing major landslides and severe flooding where\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the asphalt can&#8217;t absorb<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0water. The storm\u00a0damaged\u00a0coffee plantations, roads, power lines, and nearly 30,000 homes in its wake.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To restore the soil&#8217;s ability to absorb rain in San Salvador,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cityadapt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the CityAdapt project<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0aims to restore more than 1,000 hectares of forests and coffee plantations. Planting mangroves to protect coastlines, adding green roofs to buildings, and regenerating wetlands are just a few examples of nature-based solutions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These aim to protect communities and, in turn, increase the resilience of ecosystems. In cities,\u00a0NBSs can be combined with buildings that are adapted to climate challenges. According to the United\u00a0Nations Environment Program (UNEP), investing in\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">resilient, well-designed buildings<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/practical-guide-climate-resilient-buildings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">one of the best solutions<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for adapting to climate change. But the truth is, there are cheaper, simpler, more sustainable options, such as restoring ecosystems. Coral reefs, for instance, can break waves and absorb their energy before they reach shores.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mangroves, on the other hand, reduce the force of winds, limit flooding, and absorb energy from waves. Repopulating them can offer numerous benefits: in addition to protecting coasts, mangroves are\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">important blue carbon ecosystems<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and they filter water and provide food and wood to coastal communities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Green, fresh, and safe\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Climate studies show that there&#8217;s no doubt about it: according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change&#8217;s (IPCC)\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/assessment-report\/ar6\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=Planeta%20Mauna%20Loa&amp;utm_campaign=20210812\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">sixth report<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, average temperatures will inevitably\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rise by 1.5\u00b0C<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0over the 19th century in the next two decades. In recent decades, urban development has replaced forests and wetlands with roads, buildings, and other infrastructure.
