For many of us, a highway is an essential tool that gets us from Point A to Point B. Some of us rely on it daily to make a living, or others use them to escape to far-away places. In either case, I\u2019m sure most of the time we don\u2019t even think about how much easier highways make our lives. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, when there\u2019s an issue like an accident or\u00a0debris in the road, our\u00a0convenient tool\u00a0turns into a parking lot. This is where my team comes in. In order to\u00a0<\/span>keep our drivers moving quickly and safely<\/span><\/b>, my team works hard 24\/7 to not only take care of issues when they\u00a0arise but\u00a0prevent them from happening in the first place.\u00a0<\/span>I-77 Express<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and the general-purpose lanes\u00a0are comprised\u00a0of\u00a0250\u00a0lane miles and, on any given day, thousands of cars are whizzing by at speeds of 70\u00a0mph\u00a0all the while our staff is hard at work. Needless to say, this is not your average\u00a0day job.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Safety is Key<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Building highways and roads is undoubtedly difficult, but maintaining them can also be difficult, time-consuming, and not to mention dangerous. Given the amount of work needed to get done, members of my team are out on the field at all hours of the day and night trimming trees, picking up litter and debris, landscaping, repairing signs, etc.- you name it, we\u2019re doing it!\u00a0Now,\u00a0if you\u2019ve ever done yard work or\u00a0attended a\u00a0beach clean-up, you know how laborious and painstaking this type of work can be.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the laborious aspects of the work,\u00a0<\/span>road maintenance can also be quite dangerous<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0Starting as a technician, I saw first-hand the dangers our road workers face day-to-day; for example,\u00a0picking up\u00a0sharp objects,\u00a0being exposed to harsh chemicals, and of\u00a0course constantly worrying about\u00a0traffic. Now as the Daytime\u00a0Maintenance Supervisor, I\u2019ve gotten\u00a0the opportunity\u00a0to work with an incredibly innovative team that hasn\u2019t just made our work more\u00a0efficient but\u00a0has immensely improved the safety of our road workers.\u00a0Here are some of the cool things my team has come up with:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  • The Boom Sprayer\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    \"Boom<\/p>\n

    Essentially, a large truck with a\u00a0sprayer on front and the herbicide container on\u00a0the back, this machine allows our guys to spray weed-killer from the safety of\u00a0inside the truck. Before the invention of the boom sprayer, a team member was\u00a0either\u00a0perched\u00a0in the basket on the back of a truck\u00a0or walking alongside the highway, and in both cases\u00a0without any protection in the event of an accident.\u00a0Now with the\u00a0boom sprayer, our workers are safely inside a protective \u2018cocoon\u2019. The\u00a0boom sprayer also allows the user to control the pressure of the spray, minimizing the exposure to harsh chemicals. Not only is this new machine significantly safer for our workers, it also allows us to do in one night what used to take us 2 weeks!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    • The Shoulder Cutter\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Rain collecting on the shoulder of a highway can be quite dangerous for drivers, so when it rains a lot, my team is out there on the shoulder removing the water. Before the invention of the shoulder cutter,\u00a0this had to be done by hand with shovels. Our team would walk alongside the road clearing the shoulders and be completely exposed to the rain and traffic. With the invention of the shoulder cutter, the machine\u00a0can quickly remove water from the shoulder at a significantly faster pace while our workers sit comfortably inside the vehicle-\u00a0preventing both auto accidents and injuries to our workers.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      What\u2019s Next?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

      There\u2019s no\u00a0question\u00a0that the work our team does is difficult, but it\u2019s incredibly rewarding to drive along I-77 Express and see the beautiful North Carolina landscape and know that we have\u00a0had a\u00a0hand in maintaining\u00a0its\u00a0natural beauty.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      At the same time, we\u2019re always looking for ways to improve our work. As innovators, our team is constantly thinking up new ideas and trying to make\u00a0our\u00a0work safer and more efficient.\u00a0In the last 10 years, I\u2019ve seen great advancements in road maintenance tools and I\u2019m sure the next 10 years will bring about even more impressive\u00a0inventions\u00a0as technology continues to advance. I\u2019m not sure yet what our next project will be, but one thing\u2019s for sure,\u00a0the safety of our drivers and workers\u00a0is\u00a0our top priority.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
