While its use as a draft animal, pack animal, and a mode of transportation didn\u2019t stop increasing in ancient times, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/figure\/United-States-Farm-based-Horse-Population-1850-2007_fig1_254456029\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">around 1750<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> there was a real <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">explosion in the equine population<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Every year, the number of horses increased by about 3% in large cities. New York, Paris, Manchester, and London all saw more and more equines. With a smaller horse population or one that\u2019s scattered over an area, this isn\u2019t necessarily a problem. In fact, manure has numerous <\/span><a href=\"\/es?p=26785\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">ecological and industrial applications<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The same thing happened in New York. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/dt0mk1b09NM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">New York Historical Society<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> says that, before the age of the automobile, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">about 500 tons of horse manure were collected every day<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> from the streets. This was the product of about 62,000 horses from 1,300 different stables. Three days later, it dissolved when they were unable to come up with a solution. Paradoxically, the problem went down only a few decades later, and the solution came from the automotive world, as we will see. Few cities, though, come close to 19th-century Memphis (Tennessee). Its biggest battle was in manure management. In <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1815, London channeled<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a good part of the collection of fecal waters and waste on the pavement. In Boston, this happened in 1833, while Rome did it in 1865; Paris waited until 1880. And for good reason.
