What does energy from nuclear fusion entail? Why does it still elude us almost seventy years after its conception? And most importantly, what has been achieved during those years that gives us hope for a more sustainable, decarbonized world? This is how <b>nuclear fusion engineering<\/b> has advanced.<\/p>\n<h2>Nuclear fusion, clean nuclear fusion<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nuclear<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has lots of negative connotations due to certain accidents in nuclear fusion technology; Chernobyl is the first to come to mind. However, the branch of study dealing with these subatomic properties of nature has come up with technology like <\/span><b>nuclear medicine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that saves lives on a daily basis, <\/span><b>food irradiation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to eliminate pathogens, and <\/span><b>nuclear fusion technology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which promises to be one of the sustainable energy sources of the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike nuclear fission, which splits heavy atoms and generates long-lasting radioactive waste, <\/span><b>nuclear fusion unites light atoms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to give rise to reactions that are the opposite of fission. These types of reactions actually occur in the Sun. Nuclear fusion does not produce long-lasting nuclear waste, nor can it undergo destructive chain reactions, radioactive leaks, or deflagration. Nor does it hold military potential like big explosions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only thing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nuclear fusion needs are light atoms like hydrogen (which is everywhere) and input energy, it is considered to be a technology with great potential for sustainability and decarbonization. If stable production and commercialization were achieved, as the<\/span> <a href=\"\/es?p=39712\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">international project ITER<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hopes to do, this could drastically reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Here are some of the most significant ones:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tokamak HL-2M from Chengdu (China) managed to operate at <\/span><b>150 million degrees for 10 seconds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2021. In May of that same year, the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) in Hefei reached 120 million degrees Celsius for 101 seconds, and in December, they stabilized 70 million degrees Celsius for 17 minutes at the same facility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of that year, an MIT team achieved another<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ans.org\/news\/article-3240\/mit-ramps-10ton-magnet-up-to-20-tesla-in-proof-of-concept-for-commercial-fusion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">milestone in magnetic field strength<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with its SPARC reactor. The magnetic field is key both in tokamak containment and in smaller reactors. This team reached <\/span><b>20 teslas of magnetic field for five hours<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In comparison, the Earth has a field of 0.00007 T.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike experimental reactors like ITER, SPARC is <\/span><b>designed for commercial use<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As David Kirtley, CEO of Helion Energy, points out in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/undecidedmf.com\/why-nuclear-fusion-is-closer-than-you-think\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Nuclear Fusion Is Closer Than You Think<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this reactor design is more interesting for commercial purposes because<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/yNP8by6V3RA?t=391\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it &#8216;captures&#8217; electrical energy directly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and doesn&#8217;t go through turbines or systems that make it lose efficiency. In addition, they work in parallel with several generations of reactors to speed up the process. What they learn with tests using 5 or 6 of them is applied to design the seventh, <\/span><b>speeding up the innovation calendar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Unlocking SPARC: HTS Magnet for Commercial Fusion Applications\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yXLO3-7BRwQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the advantages of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psfc.mit.edu\/sparc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SPARC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is that it doesn&#8217;t require &#8216;ignition&#8217; either, a term that became popular in 2022. Back in 2021<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/news\/228373\/major-nuclear-fusion-milestone-reached-ignition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a laboratory test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> achieved ignition at the National Ignition Facility (NIF), reaching 1.9 MJ of outgoing energy for each fusion reaction. In<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.llnl.gov\/news\/national-ignition-facility-achieves-fusion-ignition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">December 2022<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for the first time in history, this laboratory managed to produce <\/span><b>3.15 MJ of output with just 2.05 MJ of input in less than one billionth of a second<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While its commercialization or common use is still not viable, that had never been done before.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>A large-scale financing problem<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first calculations and experiments on nuclear fusion were done around the middle of the 20th century; at that point, they projected it would take <\/span><b>20 to 30 years to achieve stable fusion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But with each passing decade, that agenda has been pushed back. Why are there always decades to go to achieve fusion?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a matter of <\/span><b>resources, both economic and energetic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/large.stanford.edu\/courses\/2021\/ph241\/margraf1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower graph<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, drawn by the German physicist and biologist Rachel Margraf, shows the United States&#8217; contribution as a pioneer country in nuclear fusion during the last century from the beginning of this long-distance race. The upward curve coincides with the oil crisis of 1973 and 1974. The descending one reflects the increase in <\/span><a href=\"\/es?p=45184\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"\/es?p=45199\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cheap fuel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-47847\" src=\"https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/02\/14090048\/grafica-combustuble.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/02\/14090048\/grafica-combustuble.jpg 886w, https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/02\/14090048\/grafica-combustuble-300x230.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/02\/14090048\/grafica-combustuble-768x589.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since there is a relationship between energy need and fuel price, the <\/span><b>current energy crisis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is expected to be a driver of nuclear fusion, as well as other clean technologies like renewables. The war in Ukraine has accelerated the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.es\/medio-ambiente\/2022\/05\/como-la-guerra-de-ucrania-esta-acelerando-la-transicion-energetica-renovable-en-alemania\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Energiewende<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Germany&#8217;s transition to<\/span> <a href=\"\/es?p=46662\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green energies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rest of Europe has followed suit, and the REPowerEU project, which aimed to make 55% of energy renewable by 2030, has raised that figure to 69%.
