Given this situation, the question we have to ask is, &#8220;How are we going to feed the world&#8217;s population?&#8221; Agriculture in controlled environments, also called &#8216;<\/span><b>indoor cultivation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&#8217; holds some of the keys to the future of human food: <\/span><b>high-tech infrastructures to cultivate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all kinds of vegetables and fruits.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What does indoor agriculture entail?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In essence, <\/span><b>indoor farming consists of growing crops inside buildings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> using advanced technology systems such as hydroponics (nutrient solutions instead of soil), aeroponics (roots are sprayed with water mist), or aquaponics (a combination of aquaculture and hydroponics). And many, many LED lights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common images of agriculture crops in controlled environments are <\/span><b>large hangars in semi-twilight<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or purple-pink light, <\/span><b>with high shelves<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> up to the ceiling <\/span><b>filled with lettuce<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and staff in lab coats. In the photo, a farmer picks lettuce in Singapore. Why are these environments purple? Why does the farmer look like a laboratory researcher?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-49023 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/05\/23094340\/cultivo-vertical-de-interior-e1684828300152.jpg\" alt=\"indoor vertical cultivation\" width=\"599\" height=\"401\" \/><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Sgverticalfarming1.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lianoland Wimons<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>High-tech agriculture<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agriculture in controlled environments <\/span><b>should be understood to be &#8220;high-tech agriculture&#8221;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is also, in theory, high efficiency. At least, that&#8217;s the long-term goal; we&#8217;re still in an accelerated phase of development. You have to imagine these<\/span> <a href=\"\/es?p=33701\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">major infrastructures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like factories, <\/span><a href=\"\/es?p=33255\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">assembly line<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or industrialized processes: this will be a linear process until the plant is developed, even though this &#8216;food factory&#8217; <\/span><b>will be part of the circular economy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike outdoor farming, which is subject to environmental chaos that&#8217;s often not predictable (diseases, pests, weather), indoor vertical farming is a type of <\/span><b>cultivation that&#8217;s characterized by predictability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The managers of these infrastructures know metrics such as water flows, energy consumed, production volume, losses, and so on at all times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s not that indoor agriculture has been highly modernized; <\/span><b>it started out modernized<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, much like how <\/span><a href=\"\/es?p=42106\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electric cars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are digital by design. Moreover, this type of crop can use local inputs such as organic matter, sunlight, and water from the watershed where the produce will be consumed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Purple farms, the engineering rationale behind the color of agriculture in controlled environments<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plants need several elements to grow and develop. Water, nutrients, and light are the most important, followed by others like temperature. At these &#8216;food factories,&#8217; <\/span><b>vegetation receives the exact elements it needs for growth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, no more and no less, without wasting a drop of water or a kWh of energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you see areas lit in purple or pink at these farms, you are actually seeing the effect of illumination with blue and red LEDs, leaving out the green part of the spectrum since green plants don&#8217;t absorb these frequencies. Why waste energy on emitting light that doesn&#8217;t do anything? It&#8217;s all a matter of using <\/span><b>technology for energy savings<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Fields on fields: high-altitude engineering to take up less space<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the challenges of traditional farming is its dependence on fossil energy and its impact on the environment due to using vast areas of land. Indoor cultivation technology solves this by creating <\/span><b>&#8216;fields&#8217; at different heights<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by stacking levels on top of each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to a type of engineering that&#8217;s well-established (vertical warehouses), it&#8217;s possible to reach<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2002655117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1:10 crop ratios<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, climbing to ten stories and maximizing the land use. The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/sustainability\/news\/detail\/es\/c\/1279267\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FAO estimates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that each person needs about 0.20 hectares for their food (about 2,000 m<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). This technology would make it possible to reduce that amount to 200 m<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through<\/span> <a href=\"\/es?p=45986\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vertical cultivation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; that&#8217;s a 14&#215;14 meter square and ten floors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>This technology does not require pesticides, insecticides, or herbicides<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the advantages of controlled environment crops is precisely the <\/span><b>environmental control<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that&#8217;s possible. While they will always be susceptible to human errors that introduce pathogens (why workers are dressed like they are), the truth is, this is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cleaner<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than the traditional alternatives because pests can&#8217;t thrive inside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By eliminating the need for inputs like pesticides, herbicides, or insecticides, as well as all the negative impacts associated with these compounds, these crops are more sustainable in this regard, and they also ensure a <\/span><b>regular production volume<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As previously mentioned, it has to be seen more as a food factory than as cultivation as it was done in centuries past.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The exact nutrients the plant needs: new agricultural engineering<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-49025 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/05\/23094317\/tecnologia-alimentaria-cultivo-interior-en-entornos-controlados-e1684828436679.jpg\" alt=\"Indoor farming in a controlled environment\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/es\/fotos\/FDzh1--azLM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ThisisEngineering RAEng<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But a key point of this whole growth cycle is <\/span><b>the way nitrogen is used<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a key element in the development of plants that often acts as a bottleneck. In open-air fields, it&#8217;s common to fertilize crops with very expensive synthetic fertilizers that have a high environmental impact and are inefficient, and their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/four-reasons-why-world-needs-limit-nitrogen-pollution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">waste pollutes the environment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This indoor infrastructure for cultivation also includes synthetic nitrogen, but on a much smaller scale, and it is fully utilized. Nitrogen circulates within a closed circuit of nutrients, and, just like the electrical energy for the LEDs, <\/span><b>the exact amount needed is supplied without any waste<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This prevents wasting resources or polluting natural areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Crop technology against food waste<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When cultivation is moved from the field into a highly modernized infrastructure, one of the immediate results is a <\/span><b>drastic reduction of food waste<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by preventing adverse weather events, such as heat waves and hurricanes, eliminating pests, preventing a lack of workers at specific times, etc. The crop becomes predictable and more productive, as well as invulnerable to events like frost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-49027 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.ferrovial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/05\/23094254\/cultivo-tradicional-en-peligro-e1684828828334.jpg\" alt=\"traditional cultivation\" width=\"599\" height=\"397\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/es\/fotos\/gxt05XHaQ9Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ernesta Vala<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is so much the case that it&#8217;s possible to work with <\/span><b>crops on demand, cultivating only what will be consumed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, versus the classic model of producing as much as possible in the hope that it will be bought. This is one of the greatest contributions engineering has made to the field through optimized systems such as farms inside hangars. But it&#8217;s not all pluses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Agriculture in controlled environments still needs more development<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agriculture in controlled environments is a relatively new form of cultivation still in development. For example, the cycle of lettuces and green leafy plants is so optimized that it&#8217;s already much more efficient to grow indoors, but this is because these types of plants are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">simple<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> compared to others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the challenges of this type of agriculture is electrification. While it does usually use less gross energy in the end than outdoor cultivation, indoor agriculture actually needs electrical energy rather than mechanical or chemical sources (available from petroleum derivatives). So this leap from the field to the indoors <\/span><b>takes more efficiency in<\/b> <a href=\"\/es?p=46662\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\"><b>renewable<\/b><\/a><b> electric energy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, this technology is not a panacea, nor will it be implemented all over the world in the same way. New studies have shown that the leading technology almost everywhere around the world is still<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43016-022-00461-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">greenhouses, over outdoor fields<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, leaving agriculture in controlled environments as optimal only in places with unfavorable environmental conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This all seems to suggest that indoor cultivation technology would be a huge support for <\/span><b>feeding the world at a low cost and with a low environmental impact<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
