Terminal 2, the largest privately funded construction project in the history of the United Kingdom. Construction took place in the heart of Heathrow, between two runways and their taxiways. <\/p>\n    \n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> The New <em>Queen\u2019s Terminal<\/em> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As the main shareholder at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/en-ca\/business\/projects\/heathrow-airport\/\">Heathrow Airport<\/a>, we are fully committed to the <strong>continuous improvement of our services and airport facilities<\/strong> to enhance the passenger journey of the <strong>more than 80 million <\/strong>that travel through our terminals every year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2014, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II inaugurated the new Terminal 2 of the London airport\u2013named&nbsp;<em>The Queen\u2019s Terminal<\/em>\u2013the&nbsp;<strong>renovation of which totaled 3 billion euros<\/strong>, which made it one of the largest construction projects financed by a private company in the United Kingdom\u2019s history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2014, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II opened the new\nTerminal 2 of the London airport, also known as&nbsp;<em>The Queen\u2019s Terminal. <\/em><strong>Renovations totaled 3 million euros<\/strong>, making it one of the largest\nconstruction projects financed by a private company in the history of the United\nKingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project \u2014 financed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/es\/f-aeropuertos\/\">Ferrovial Aeropuertos<\/a>&nbsp;and built by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/en-ca\/f-construction\/\" class=\"ek-link\">Ferrovial Construction<\/a> in a consortium with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laingorourke.com\/\">Laing O\u2019Rourke<\/a> \u2014 allowed for the creation of a terminal with a capacity for <strong>more than<\/strong> <strong>20 million passengers a year<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Terminal 2 expands over an area of<strong> 210,000 m<sup>2<\/sup>. <\/strong>&nbsp;The construction replaced the old terminal that had been in operation since 1955. The project also included the construction of a&nbsp;<strong>satellite terminal<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>new access roads<\/strong>, a new&nbsp;<strong>aircraft parking<\/strong>&nbsp;area to house state-of-the-art airplanes and a renovated, higher-capacity&nbsp;<strong>train station<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When passengers arrive at Terminal 2, they see a large aluminum sculpture called&nbsp;<strong>Slipstream<\/strong>, designed by the renowned British artist Richard Wilson. The sculpture weighs&nbsp;<strong>77 tons and is 78 meters long<\/strong>. It recreates the path of a small aircraft performing aerial acrobatics and has been described as the largest permanent sculpture in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> Improving the experience of our customers and employees <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since it opened, the terminal has been voted as the World\u2019s\nBest Airport Terminal by the Skytrax awards on multiple occasions. The terminal\nmost recently won this award in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The combination of technological and artistic elements at\nTerminal 2 make it one of the&nbsp;<strong>most innovative<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>airport\ninfrastructures in the world<\/strong>, which has improved the experience of our passengers and our 75,000\nemployees who work at the London hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Construction Project <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The terminal was built by Ferrovial in consortium with&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.laingorourke.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Laing O\u2019Rourke<\/a>. <strong>Luis Vidal + Architects <\/strong>are the concept and lead architects for Heathrow\u2019s Terminal 2 and are collaborating with <strong>Pascall + Watson<\/strong> during the fit out phase. <strong>Foster + Partners <\/strong>were the Heathrow Airport master planners and the East terminal building concept architects during the initial project phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As mentioned previously, the terminal and satellite building covers a surface area of 210,000 m\u00b2 (equal to&nbsp;<strong>25 soccer fields)<\/strong> and required an investment of<strong>&nbsp;3 billion euros<\/strong>. Furthermore, the project\u2019s execution was a huge success in terms of jobs \u2014 creating&nbsp;<strong>35,000 jobs<\/strong> \u2014 and in terms of safety \u2014 with a total of&nbsp;<strong>0 accidents in more than 5 million working hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We completed the project in five years and seven months: <strong>ahead\nof schedule<\/strong> and without disrupting airport operations. Over the six months preceding\nits opening, we ran more than<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>180 million tests<\/strong> to ensure that the check-in process\nand other terminal processes worked perfectly. We also ran a series of\nsimulations to see how the terminal worked for passengers. <strong>14,000 people took\npart in these simulations<\/strong>, the largest of which involved more\nthan 3,000 volunteers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One of the Most Sustainable Terminals <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to being an excellent, modern facility that\nsimplifies the flow of passengers, luggage and aircrafts, it is also environmentally\nfriendly. Construction work was carried out in accordance with the highest sustainability\nstandards, making Terminal 2 the first facility of its kind to receive the&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.breeam.es\/\">BREEAM<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;(<em>Building Research Establishment Environmental\nAssessment Methodology<\/em>)&nbsp;<strong>environmental certification<\/strong>. In addition to recycling&nbsp;<strong>100% of the\nwaste from the demolition of the old terminal<\/strong>, the facility has an\nenergy-efficiency center that runs on renewable energy.
