key element to transform and operate our airport assets efficiently. One of the best examples of this transformation and commitment to innovation has been the construction of the world\u2019s largest integrated baggage system.<\/p>\n    \n\n\n<p>This cutting-edge project allows one of the most active airports in the world to be managed efficiently, improving the experience of thousands of passengers who travel through its terminals every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Construction Phase<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/en-gb\/business\/projects\/heathrow-airport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Heathrow&nbsp; (opens in a new tab)\">Heathrow&nbsp;<\/a>decided to develop this pioneering centralized baggage handling system, no other airport in the world had considered the possibility of building an <strong>underground circuit <\/strong>beneath operating terminals. Heathrow\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>Western Interface Building<\/strong>&nbsp;(WIB), which connects&nbsp;<strong>T5<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>T3<\/strong>, and&nbsp;<strong>Terminal 3 Integrated Baggage<\/strong>(T3IB) are the two main facilities that give shape to the world\u2019s largest integrated baggage system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nWIB installation consist of a<strong>&nbsp;1.2\nkm tunnel<\/strong>&nbsp;that goes through the inner depths of the\nairport between T3 and T5, becoming the <strong>longest\ninter-terminal transfer tunnel in Europe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferrovial.com\/en-gb\/f-construction\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">Ferrovial Construction<\/a>,&nbsp;in partnership with Heathrow and with&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mottmac.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mott MacDonald<\/a>&nbsp;leading the design, developed an outstanding project in terms of construction as it was executed <strong>without disrupting&nbsp; the daily airport operations<\/strong> and was completed in record time and with exceptional safety standards<strong>. There was not a single<\/strong> <strong>incident&nbsp;<\/strong>during the more than one million hours required for its construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nsystem has a capacity to simultaneously process up to<strong>&nbsp;7,200 pieces of luggage per hour<\/strong>&nbsp;and\nis capable of moving bags at speeds up to<strong>&nbsp;700\nmeters per minute<\/strong>&nbsp;between terminals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since\nit came into operation, this new centralized baggage handling has &nbsp;increased efficiency at Heathrow,&nbsp;<strong>reducing incidents of mislaid or\ndelayed luggage<\/strong>.
