slot=\"maincontent\">    <p class=\"intro\">Refurbishment of facilities in the Bonneau medical centre and supply of  equipment, to ensure quality healthcare for the population in an  appropriate setting. The project envisages the provision of a separate  delivery room, which was before shared with A&#038;E, and two wards with  hospital beds. The facilities will also be provided with electricity.<\/p>\n    \n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Current situation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Half\n of Haiti\u2019s population lives in extreme poverty. Natural disasters \naffecting the country (earthquakes and hurricanes) are a barrier to \ndevelopment and cause recurrent bouts of diseases such as cholera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\n is a need for urgent action to provide adequate infrastructures and \nresources for access to health services. Urban centres such as Bonneau, \nwith a population of approximately 8,000 and a further 7,000 in \nsurrounding areas, lack adequate healthcare facilities, forcing patients\n to travel 8 km to Saint-Louis-du-Nord, on a journey which requires \ncrossing three rivers that have no bridges and is thus dependant on \ntides and weather conditions such as storms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2015, the \n\u201cTeresina Sisters\u201d congregation took over the town\u2019s medical centre, but\n the facilities are in a precarious state. The centre currently provides\n regular outpatient consultations, emergency care and deliveries, and \nprovides treatment in cases of tuberculosis and cholera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The\n project aims to provide quality healthcare to all the population of \nBonneau through refurbishment of facilities and equipment of the town\u2019s \nonly health centre. This centre receives no public support and therefore\n cannot itself fund the necessary refurbishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project will \nprovide a delivery room separate from the A&amp;E facility, and a \nfurther maternity unit with three beds; two wards will be provided with \nbeds for hospital inpatients; ceilings, walls and columns will be \nrepaired and broken tiles will be replaced.
