“ÑU SAVI” (LANS OF RAIN). WATER FOR THE MIXTEC
Implementation of a drinking water system comprising a pumping system to pump water to a storage tank that will guarantee the supply to the population. A distribution network will pipe water from the storage tank to the 10 streets in the village. Families will connect their homes to the pipes laid along the streets.
In addition to supplying drinking water, the project will recharge the aquifer layer around the well from which the water is to be drawn using simple soil conservation techniques.

STRENGTHEN THE SAN BOSCO AQUEDUCT SYSTEM BY BUILDING A WATER TREATMENT PLANT IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF MIRILLA IN COLOMBIA
The project aims to address the shortage of potable water from the San Bosco aqueduct by building a drinking water treatment plant and training local leaders of both sexes in maintaining the plant.
The project consists of a water intake, a settling tank, a well, a pumping system and a 40 cubic metre tank located 25 metres above ground. This system will remedy the shortage of water during periods of drought that have been occurring in recent years; however, the water that is supplied has not been treated, hence the application of this project.

PROVISION OF DRINKING WATER AND SANITARY EDUCATION TO FAMILIES IN A SITUATION OF VULNERABILITY IN THE CHINCHA PROVINCE ICA REGION, PERU
Implement a water supply system for 810 people in a situation of extreme vulnerability.
The project has two components: construction of drinking water mains and pipes to homes; and installation of water pipes within the houses. This requires working closely with each family to gain their participation in the work to be done inside their homes, managing registration of their water supplies with the service provider (SEMAPACH), and training in healthy habits.
The project envisages a baseline survey and a final survey to provide a better measurement (since there is some preliminary data for identifying the problem) of the indicators, results and objective at the beginning and upon completion of the project.

SEWERS, AND PROVISION OF ACCESS TO A SUPPLY OF QUALITY WATER FOR HOUSEHOLDS IN SAN MARCOS
This initiative arises from the needs expressed by the communities of Malcas, La Laguna, El Ollero and Venecia Alta, in the province of San Marcos, which are currently facing serious problems with the scope, amount and quality of the water supply. The population of these communities has expanded in recent years but no projects have been undertaken to increase the scope of this service.
This comprehensive water and sanitation project aims to help expand the coverage and quality of the drinking water system while promoting healthy habits, in accordance with the National Plan to Overcome Poverty. The project is to provide the families in the communities of Malcas, La Laguna, El Ollero and Venecia Alta with access to drinking water using a gravity system that meets the pertinent requirements for the normal supply and use of water to the population, coupled with healthy hygiene practices.

ESTABLISHMENT OF SUSTAINABLE, ACCESSIBLE WATER SUPPLY SYSTEMS IN MAORE AND KIHURIO COUNTIES
This project is part of the hydrosanitary programme that ONGAWA has been executing in the Same district, Kilimanjaro region, Tanzania, since 2006.
This project promotes universal and sustainable access to basic water and sanitation services in two wards of the Same district with the worst coverage.
The project primarily comprises improvements in water supply infrastructure and training to ensure the operation and maintenance of the two multi-village systems.
The project is part of the Millennium Development Goals, specifically reducing child mortality (Objective 4) through access to water and sanitation (Objective 7). The project’s general goal is to reduce mortality due to infectious or water-related diseases, which account for 5 of the 10 most common illnesses in the area.
The improvement in the population’s health, resulting from access to water and sanitation and to changes in hygiene, is directly related to the reduction in poverty, which is the overall goal of the programme. Moreover, since women are affected most negatively by the lack of access to water and sanitation, the programme will aim to have an especially positive impact on living conditions for that group.

MAJI NI UHAI, "WATER IS LIFE"
Maji ni Uhai (Water is Life) is the result of ongoing efforts by a company, Ferrovial, and an NGO, Amref, in the fight against poverty: a joint project that will provide drinking water and sanitary infrastructure to 51,000 people in Tanzania.
The project, which will benefit five communities in the Serengeti District, has a duration of three years and a budget of 1.8 million euro.
The company is committed to providing 100% of the funding, technology, and volunteers for technical studies and for monitoring the project, as well as to transferring its know-how to local communities. Amref is committed to providing logistical services for the direct execution of the project on the ground.
With this project, Ferrovial aims to become an active member in the bid to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, and specifically aims to position itself as a leader vis-à-vis Objective 8, “Develop a global partnership for development”. The special feature of this innovative collaboration method within international cooperation is the public-private partnership between a company, an NGO and the regional governments in the intervention area.
One of the fundamental aspects of the project is to build, protect and refurbish 557 sanitary and water capture and supply infrastructure, such as deep wells, filtration rings, gravity systems and latrines in schools and dispensaries.
Additionally, local experts are being trained to maintain the new infrastructure, and a campaign involving local leaders and the communities has been launched to raise awareness about good hygiene. To this end, the project aims to build an effective community organisation through the creation of Water User Associations and Health Clubs, in which women (the most vulnerable in this area) always play a key role. Activities are also organised in institutional capacity buildings for the institutions involved in implementing the project, such as the District’s Water and Health Departments.
Good hygiene will help control and reduce water-related illnesses. It will also reduce the burden on women in connection with drawing and carrying water, and will increase girls’ opportunity to attend school. In recognition of its innovative nature, Maji ni Uhai received the European Business Award for the Environment in 2010, in the International Aid category, from the European Commissioner for the Environment. It also received an honourable mention at the World Business and Development Awards in 2010, by the International Chamber of Commerce.
