Ferrovial Construction Australia, in consortium with Gamuda Australia, was awarded the contract to design and construct the Coffs Harbour Bypass in New South Wales, Australia.

With funding provided by the Australian and NSW governments, the 14-kilometre bypass will boost the regional economy and improve connectivity, road transport efficiency and safety for local, regional and interstate road users.

The Ferrovial Gamuda Joint Venture will build 14 kilometres of new and upgraded four-lane highway bypassing the Coffs Harbour CBD, running from south of the Englands Road roundabout to Sapphire Beach in the north. The bypass will save motorists 12 minutes in travel time, avoiding up to 12 sets of traffic lights and divert 12,000 vehicles per day away from the centre of town.

Three tunnels will be built for the bypass as well as three grade-separated interchanges, a new bus interchange and pedestrian footbridge servicing a local primary school, along with an upgrade of part of the existing Pacific Highway and the building of local access and service roads adjacent to sections of the new highway.

The Coffs Harbour Bypass is the final section of the M1 Pacific Highway to be upgraded to a four-lane road between Hexham and the Queesnaldn border. One of the biggest ever projects in the Coffs Harbour region, the bypass project is a priority for the Australian and NSW governments as the Pacific Highway is a major contributor to Australia’s economy. The bypass will be a key link in this vital piece of the nation’s infrastructure, connecting Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

The Bypass is expected to be open to traffic from late 2026 and fully completed in late 2027.
