Carbon Footprint
Since 2009, we have measured 100% of greenhouse gas emissions from our activities around the world in order to reduce our carbon footprint.
Global targets in the plan Horizon 2030 have been verified by the Science Based Target, aligned with the scenarios in the 2nd.
Among the objectives lies our commitment to achieve a 32% reduction of scopes 1 and 2 by 2030. Using 2009 as the year of reference, this is equivalent to reducing emissions by 42.9% for every million euros of turnover. Likewise, we are committed to reducing emissions from scope 3 by 20% until 2030, using 2012 as a year of reference.
In 2019, scope 1 and 2 emissions went down by 59% in terms of intensity compared to the base year. In 2019, Ferrovial set a reduction target of 15.24% in absolute terms compared to the base year (a reduction of 163,103 T CO2e in absolute emissions). In absolute terms, emissions have decreased by 19.52% since the base year, a reflection of our commitment to the roadmap set forth for meeting the goals.
Since 2009, and thanks to internal planning, we have reduced our scope 1 and 2 emissions by 1.572.271 tCO2e, similar figure to the anual emissions of a city with 192.027 citizens.
In 2019, the consumption of renewable electricity prevented the emissions of 87.345 tCO2e. In parallel, the avoided emisssions thanks to the sorting and capturing of biogas in landfills amounted to 2.101.022 tCO2e.
Emissions Avoided & Compensated
The emissions that could not be avoided during the activity carried that we carried out are compensated by others methods. The compensation of CO2 emissions consists of the voluntary contribution of an economic amount proportional to the tons of CO2 generated. In recent years, we carried out a compensation of emissions from the use of corporate vehicles that are controlled by the company in collaboration with ECODES in the project “Conservation of Amazon in Mother of God in Peru”.

Carbon Neutral
There is a growing demand to reduce transport emissions. In the US, we operate the North Tarrant Express (NTE); the first carbon neutral highway achieved thanks to our dynamic management of traffic. This alternative eases traffic congestion on previously existing roads. The study carried out by an independent consultant compares two scenarios: the past situation (previously existing road) and the present situation (existing road plus NTE). They concluded that, overall, the new scenario generates fewer emissions.
Also Heathrow Airport, one of the many airports that we manage, is committed to being a Zero Carbon Airport by 2050.
