The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a milestone in human history, based on a common ideal for all peoples and nations. Translated into over 500 languages, it brings together a series of fundamental rights for human beings that must be protected around the world. Various agreements, ethical codes, principles and standards in pursuit of the protection of these rights in many settings have originated from it.
Since the year 2014, we have had a specific Human Rights policy, in line with our Corporate Code of Ethics, the principles of the United Nations Global Compact, the Guiding Principles for companies and Human Rights by the United Nations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, theOCDE guidelines for multinational enterprises and the standards of the International Labor Organization.
Our policy seeks not only to guarantee compliance with Human Rights, but also to promote their spread among our groups of interest. It also guarantees the respect of the workplace rights of all of our employees and contractors in all of the countries where we operate, in accordance with the effective legislation in each country. That is to say, our commitment to Human Rights extends through our entire value chain.
Our Commitment to Human Rights and Workplace Rights
Our responsibility to comply with Human Rights is manifest in the rejection of any type of discrimination in the communities where we carry out our activities, in the cultivation of a decent, respectful workplace and in our commitment to workplace integration. Since 2017, our Ethical Channel has also incorporated various points related to Human Rights that allow us to denounce discriminatory practices or abuse in any country where we operate.
We conduct continuous analysis of the social and environmental impact of our activities and those of our partners. Not only that, all of our purchases are framed within a comprehensive analysis process to guarantee compliance with our Human Rights, Corporate Responsibility and Corporate Code of Ethics policies.
We are committed to the 31 principles contained in the National Action Plan for Business and Human Rights developed by the Spanish government. Our actions are also based on Ferrovial’s 2nd Equality Plan, which continues to guarantee the principle of equal treatment and opportunity between men and women, encouraging joint responsibility of the entire staff in their personal and family life and encouraging reconciliation. We also have a Procedure for the Prevention of Workplace and Sexual Harassment and we subscribe to the Companies for a society free of gender violence project.
Lastly, as part of our commitment to workplace rights, we guarantee the right to strike, freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining in all of the countries where we work. Our employees are protected by the workplace regulations of the different territories and 69% of our staff belong to collective agreements. We also maintain various channels to facilitate the creation of collaborative, healthy workplaces.
Human Rights: a Glocal Challenge
In some countries, we have become involved in initiatives that help raise awareness of human rights and promote measures to protect them that are adapted to the characteristics of each country.
The spread of Human Rights is a basic pillar of our commitment to this charter of principles. To that end, we participate in international forums and working groups and we have taken on positions of responsibility in the different initiatives that encourage Corporate Responsibility and Human Rights, such as the Secretariat of the Executive Committee of Forética in Spain and the position of spokesperson on the Executive Committee of the Global Compact Network.
Among other specific commitments, one important one is our alignment with the Modern Slavery Act in the United Kingdom, which guarantees the prevention of actions related to slavery in any form and human trafficking.
