Ferrovial's transparency and dialogue is underpinned by the continual enhancement of communication channels with stakeholders, based on innovative corporate disclosures that allow transparent, equitable and democratic dialogues. The process to identify stakeholders is conducted through frequent mutual relations, and stakeholders establish relations with the company through formal channels such as e-mail or service call-centers.

Ferrovial defines stakeholders both as the internal groups that are part of the company's value chain (shareholders, employees, investors, customers and suppliers), which are considered as partners in business development, as well as the so-called external stakeholders: the administration and government authorities, the media, analysts, the business community, unions, the non-profit sector and society in general, starting with the local communities where Ferrovial operates. In 2008, Ferrovial undertook for the first time the Global MFS study, based on an online opinion survey of 100 relevant stakeholders (60% from Spain and 40% from United Kingdom). The aim of this survey was to determine the relative weight (relevance) that every attribute has for the stakeholders. The environmental factors are highlighted in green.

Environmental Factors

  • High Relevance to stakeholders: Climate Change: Real or potential impact on the company.
  • Medium Medium relevance to stakeholders:
    • Environmental risk management: Real or potential impact on the company Medium.
    • Waste management: Real or potential impact on the company Medium.
    • Soil management: Real or potential impact on the company Medium.

    • Water treatment: Real or potential impact on the company Low.
    • Use of raw materials: Real or potential impact on the company Low.

Ferrovial aims to make the most of its leadership on sustainability issues, to have an influence on regulatory processes at several levels (European Commission, States and regional authorities) and strengthen relationships with its stakeholders. Ferrovial's representatives actively participate in numerous workshops and forums in order to develop international standards and the regulatory framework.

At a European level, we have taken part in task forces dedicated to developing the very recent Environmental Liability Scheme (Spain, EU). Ferrovial is also a member of ENCORD (Europe's Forum for industry-led research, development and innovation) in the construction sector and the European Construction Technological Platform. Both organizations are focused on promoting R&D on transport infrastructures and heavy construction at the European level. Currently, Ferrovial is working together with ENCORD on how to calculate the Scope 3.  Our airport division, BAA, has worked through European airports trade association, ACI- Europe, to secure clear support from Europe's airports for the inclusion of aviation in the EU ETS and it maintains direct and ongoing dialogue with the European Commission. BAA is also member of the UK's Sustainable Aviation Group, which has set out a long term strategy to ensure that the UK Aviation industry meets its environment responsibilities. The existence of the Planning and Regulatory Affairs department at BAA serves to highlight the importance of such relations.

In recent years, the group has set up a dedicated climate workgroup dealing mostly with the implementation of CRC (Carbon Reduction Commitment) in the UK of which we are an active member.

Other Activities:

  • Q&E Director is a member of the Executive Committee of the Green Building Council, as General Secretary.
  • Ferrovial has taken part in the One Planet Business Initiative (Personal Mobility), led by WWF UK.
  • Strategic Advisory Group of the Board of ISO (International Standard Organization).
  • Several standardization committees on risk management, environmental management, environmental assessment and social responsibility.
  • Advisory Workgroup for Certification of ENAC (National Accreditation Board).
  • Numerous task forces regarding new legislation on several issues; for instance: environmental risk and environmental liability, waste management, air pollution, etc.

Ferrovial's reputation allows us to access these forums in order to (i) adapt in advance to new regulations in order to reduce the impact on Ferrovial's activities and take advantage of opportunities that may come about as a result of the new regulations, and (ii) influence the regulation and legislation which is finally approved.

Trying to take advantage of the synergies with other stakeholders, we are actively involved in the creation of an information Platform in Cooperation with the Sustainability Observatory in Spain.

The Observatory on Sustainability in Spain (OSE) is an independent organization that was set up in 2005 as the result of a collaboration agreement between the Spanish Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs, the Biodiversity Foundation (Fundación Biodiversidad) and Alcalá University's General Foundation.

The OSE aspires to become a reference center for the whole of Spain that rigorously collects, processes and assesses basic information on sustainability in Spain (current situation, trends and future scenarios), always taking into account its different dimensions (social, economic and environmental).

The Urban and Territorial Sustainability Communication Platform has as an objective the change towards a new management, policy and culture of the city and the territory, and aspires to structure the existent knowledge around the good practice and the sustainable administration, identifying, picking up and diffusing experiences innovative, new politicians and the best city-planning and territorial practices that transform them into development motor in sustainability key.

The Sustainability Observatory is a part of the European Spatial Planning Observation Network (ESPON) which has been constituted to support development polices and to create a European Scientific Community in the field of the territorial development.
