Waste Management

Environmental Performance

One of our priorities is to develop infrastructure and services that contribute to addressing global challenges, such as climate change, the energy transition and biodiversity loss, integrating the highest possible level of environmental performance across our activities and throughout the life cycle of projects.

Environmental sustainability has historically been a key pillar for Ferrovial, not only as a way to exercise our responsibility and manage risks, but also as a driver of operational efficiency, innovation and the development of new business opportunities. This approach is embedded in our management systems and decision making processes across business areas.

Ferrovial carries out regular monitoring of relevant environmental indicators, including CO2 emissions (see Carbon Footprint), water consumption, waste generation and management, and environmental sanctions, and sets quantified targets to continuously improve performance. These practices support our climate strategy and foster the development of infrastructure and services aligned with a low emissions, resource efficient and resilient economy.

These measures apply to construction projects and, where applicable and subject to project scope and local requirements, to infrastructure assets under Ferrovial’s operational control, and extend across the value chain through specific environmental requirements for contractors and subcontractors.

Reducing Environmental Impact

Construction activities involve significant volumes of earthworks, which has led Ferrovial to establish specific reuse targets from the early planning and design stages, with the objective of preventing waste generation and minimizing associated environmental impacts.

On site reuse of excavated materials, where technically and environmentally feasible, helps reduce transport related emissions, improves landscape integration and promotes more efficient use of natural resources, in line with waste hierarchy principles.

In this context, Ferrovial has set an 80% soil reuse target and a 70% recovery target for construction and demolition waste (CDW). In 2025, soil reuse reached 87%, while CDW recovery amounted to 76%, reflecting the continued improvement in the environmental performance of construction activities.

Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) and Non Hazardous Waste

The management of CDW and non hazardous waste is based on environmental requirements incorporated into construction contracts, where applicable, including on site segregation, traceability, recovery targets and reporting by contractors and subcontractors, in line with the Group’s environmental objectives.

In addition to monitoring absolute waste volumes, Ferrovial tracks CDW recovery performance through normalized indicators at project and business unit level, depending on project typology and data availability. These indicators support comparable performance assessment, continuous improvement, and regulatory sustainability disclosures, including EU Taxonomy reporting, ensuring consistency across activities and contracts.

Environmental management is supported by management systems certified in accordance with ISO 14001, which provide a solid framework for operational control, legal compliance and continuous improvement of environmental performance.
