Reducing Emissions

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a key priority within Ferrovial’s Climate Strategy. The company applies an approach based on continuous improvement in operational efficiency, innovation, and the optimization of resource use, with the aim of progressively reducing its carbon footprint and contributing to the transition towards a low-carbon economy.

This approach is integrated into the Strategic Plan and is aligned with targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), in line with a decarbonization pathway consistent with the 1.5°C ambition.

Emission reduction actions combine company-wide measures with initiatives tailored to each business line. These include improving energy efficiency in operations and infrastructure, increasing the use of renewable electricity, electrifying and optimizing fleets and machinery, deploying alternative fuels, and integrating environmental criteria into procurement and subcontracting processes.

These actions are implemented within the framework of the Deep Decarbonization Path (DDP), which identifies the main emission sources and structures the key decarbonization levers, enabling the prioritization of actions based on their impact and their integration into planning and decision-making processes.

Performance

Progress in implementing these measures is reflected in the evolution of the company’s emissions, in line with the targets set in its climate strategy. Ferrovial has an emissions inventory that covers 100% of its activities and is externally verified in accordance with international standards, ensuring the reliability and transparency of the reported information. Progress against emission reduction targets is monitored annually in line with the company’s SBTi-aligned trajectory.

Deep Decarbonization Path

The Deep Decarbonization Path (DDP) sets out the roadmap to achieve short- and medium-term emission reduction targets, in line with SBTi criteria, and to reach climate neutrality by mid-century.

This plan translates the company’s climate ambition into concrete lines of action across all its businesses, enabling a structured and consistent approach to emission reduction.

The main decarbonization levers include:

  • Improving energy efficiency in operations, assets, and corporate buildings
  • Increasing the use of renewable electricity and low-carbon energy sources
  • Electrifying and progressively renewing vehicle fleets and equipment
  • Deploying alternative fuels and low-carbon technologies, particularly in construction and heavy machinery
  • Integrating environmental and energy efficiency criteria into procurement and operational processes
  • Developing innovative solutions and new business models that contribute to the transition towards a low-carbon economy

These lines of action connect strategic objectives with operational execution, ensuring continuous progress towards decarbonization targets.
