PLW Waterworks conducted significant rehabilitation of a City of Houston wastewater plant. The City of Houston manufactures a fertilizer product from the Sludge Processing Facility area of the 69th Street Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The manufacturing process involves the sterilization, dewatering, oven drying, pelletizing and storage of waste sludge into fertilizer.  The bulk of this project included an upgrade to the seven dryer units, allowing for increased capacities, cleaner operations, automated control, and improved conveyance.  Due to the complexities and demands of the facility to continually rid itself of the waste sludge materials, only one dryer bank could shut down operation for the upgrade at a time.  Electrical, instrumentation, process and piping work had to be performed individually in concert with the entire process in action.  Other work included pump replacement, electrical sub-station improvements, bird/pigeon exclusion devices, clarifier upgrades and digester cleaning.
