Job Description:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform highly skilled and complex mechanical repairs
  • Inspect and test vehicles and equipment; complete preventive maintenance such as engine tune-ups, oil changes, tire rotation, and changes, wheel balancing, replacing filters.
  • Maintain vehicle functional condition by listening to operator complaints; conducting inspections; repairing engine failures; repairing mechanical and electrical systems malfunctions; replacing parts and components; repairing body damage
  • Verify vehicle serviceability by conducting test drives; adjusting controls and systems
  • Perform bumping, painting, heating, drilling, bolting, welding (MIG, Stick, TIG), brazing, sandblasting, soldering or cutting operations
  • Adjust or repair and replace parts in engines, transmissions, differentials, brakes, and other equipment
  • Comply with state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards
  • Maintain vehicle appearance by cleaning and washing, and minor painting
  • Maintain vehicle records by recording service and repairs
  • Keep shop equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs
  • Locate appropriate vendors and works with the maintenance manager and purchasing coordinator to establish accounts if necessary
  • Participate in the selection of equipment and in the preparation of specifications for purchase
  • Contain costs by using and tracking warranties and evaluating service and parts options
  • Keep supplies ready by inventorying stock, placing orders, and verifying receipt
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical publications
  • Perform road service on equipment as required
  • Create and organize a PM schedule for all equipment and vehicles
  • Attend meetings and classes
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Maintenance Manager or Supervisor

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):

Education & Experience:

  • A high school diploma or GED
  • 4 – 7+ years of experience working as a mechanic or similar role
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
  • ASE Certification preferred

Professional Qualities:

  • Experience, skilled and considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of various types of heavy equipment and other power-driven equipment and tools, including but not limited to:
    • Large equipment: sweepers, tractors, heavy-duty trucks and other equipment that involve hydraulic systems;
    • Small equipment:  mowers, weed eaters, chain saws, generators, backpack blowers and other related and similar equipment;
    • Vehicles: especially Ford trucks
  • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports
  • Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions
  • Ability to analyze and repair mechanical failures
  • Ability to research sources online, speak professionally on telephone and computer literacy a must
  • Ability to work effectively and establish good working relationships with other employees
  • Needs to be a focused problem solver who works independently
  • Ability to work effectively with the general public
  • Good traffic record
  • Nighttime or weekend work may be required as needed

Computer Skills:

  • Must be able to demonstrate computer proficiency within Microsoft Word
