Health, Safety and Wellbeing

We have been designing, building, and managing sustainable infrastructure for more than 70 years, with a unique style.

This would not be possible without the people behind each project, each concession, and each work, who are the best ambassadors of our values through their day-to-day contribution to society.

“Always Safe, Always Ready” Campaign

In 2020, our “Always Safe, Always Ready” (ASAR) philosophy was born to frame Ferrovial’s culture, attitude, and commitment to Safety, Health, and Wellness.

We understand the meaning of always being safe. But what does always prepared mean? Being prepared as people means that we have a safe plan for working, that we will lend a hand to less experienced colleagues, that we have done the appropriate safety checks, and that we are trained and know our job well.

Our ASAR philosophy has evolved and no longer only establishes our safety, health, and wellness culture; it goes beyond that and sets the strategic pillars to address objectives at all levels of the organization

Organizational Focus

Leadership

We actively involve our leaders so that they are the first to promote transparency and assume responsibility. Our leaders must be an example to follow, and for this reason, they are committed to CSR through different initiatives such as leadership with employees and establishing personal commitments that they must fulfill.

Competences

We develop our team members through a competency framework to improve their ability to work safely. We take the SCR (safety-critical function) as the leading indicator.

We identify the SCR segment of our business unit population to ensure they are licensed to operate safely and provide the necessary training to perform that safety-critical role.

  • Indicator: 90% of critical safety managers are competent

Resilience

We advance in the continuous improvement of our businesses by learning from our experience and innovating to reduce risks. Observations, inspections, audits, incidents, or suggestions for best practices are the improvement actions generated by our business units, and we count them to report analytics and improve processes.

What we value in our strategy is not the numbers but the improvement actions that the business has proposed. We want to be sure that the objectives set are met.

  • Indicator: 80% of shares closed

Interaction

We foster a culture of care in which our team members protect each other and report when they detect unsafe situations.

Our team must be committed to safety, and to encourage this we organize toolbox talks, management visits to projects, awareness campaigns, health and safety wellness weeks or any other initiative that can help increase the commitment of our staff.

  • Indicator: 90% of engagement initiatives implemented.

Operational Approach

Competence and awareness

When plans fail us, so we somehow miss control, and that risk of severe and fatal injury breaks through those two layers of defense. All we are left with is our own competence and awareness of the risk. We train people before they even start working not only to look out for each other but also to look out for each other, setting up the tools necessary to speak up if there is an imminent risk and detecting unsafe situations or actions so that injuries can be avoided.

Control and verifying

We monitor and verify through critical controls our safe work standards, our health and safety inspections and observations. We ensure that our team members comply with our standards.

Planning and preparation

We plan everything we do. We mobilize on a project right through the pre-construction phase and, when we are on-site or in operation, continually adapting to changing conditions. We have a plan for success, a plan to work safely.
