About us:

Ferrovial Construction is internationally recognized for its capacity to design and build civil engineering and construction projects, mainly in large transportation infrastructure. Its track-record to date includes more than 490 km of tunnels, 19,200 km of roads (including 4,000 km of highways), 4,700 km of railroad lines (including 700 km of high-speed railroads) and 27,350 km of road maintenance and repair.

Project description:

The Ontario Line South Civil Project is responsible for the design, construction and handover of all tunnels, stations and civil works between Exhibition Station and a portal location within the Don Yard. This includes, without limitation, seven Stations (one at grade and six underground stations), 6 km of Tunnels, a range of civil works and ancillary building works, and successful handover of the constructed South Civil Contract assets to the Sponsors.

Structures Design Manager:

In this managerial capacity, they will be responsible for overseeing the engineering activities of the Engineering Services Department pertaining to the structural subjects of the projects in which they will be involved, as well as for formulating and normalizing policies and strategies for projects.  

 

A Structures Design Manager oversees the structural design part of the overall design, with regards to both new and existing structures (retrofit, rehabilitation, modification, interaction between new and existing structures), of different typologies depending on the construction materials (concrete, steel) or their specific configuration (at grade, underground). They are responsible for ensuring the timely production and delivery of all the construction design documents (such as drawings and reports) related to structures for client approval and subsequent implementation in the works 

 

Specifically, and under the direction of the Design Manager of each one of the projects to which they will be assigned, the Structures Design Manager will be responsible for carrying out the following managerial job duties: 

  • Supervise work through planning and scheduling work activities of the team.  

  • Supervise and control the work of other supervisory, professional, or managerial employees.  

  • Oversee, monitor, and review the design work performed by the teams of structural engineers of the external consultant companies contracted by Ferrovial Construction to perform the design, providing them guidance as required to meet the criteria of Ferrovial Construction and the requirements of the client; 

  • Review structural drawings and reports;  

  • Propose changes to the structures, pursuing cost and constructability optimization and risk mitigation; 

  • Collaborate with several other senior-level and professional managerial employees;

  • Coordinate with other teams, such as construction and utilities, and with other design discipline teams such as architecture, drainage, mechanical and electrical, addressing any potential conflicts in the most beneficial way for the project as a whole.

  • Work with the client with regards to structural designs as well as providing advice and assessment about engineering issues or structural options; 

  • Perform various leadership activities, including mentorship and guidance of junior employees; 

 

Minimum requirements: 

  • Masters degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Engineering 

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in at least one Province in Canada, or the ability to obtain registration in Ontario within 6 months. 

  • Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in the detailed design of structures and civil infrastructure projects (plan production and specifications). 

  • Sound knowledge on structural design, and previous experience leading structural design teams or external consultants required.  

  • Knowledge and experience with Autodesk software (Civil 3D, Autocad, Revit, Autodesk Construction Cloud or BIM360), and other applicable common software in the field of transportation engineering.  

  • Demonstrated qualities of leadership and hard work. 

  • Ability to read and interpret construction documents, drawings, and specifications. 

  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. 

  • Must possess strong attention to detail and can work in a fast-paced environment; eagerness to learn and apply engineering skills to develop creative problem-solving designs/ideas. 

  • Strong commitment to high standards, integrity, and ethics.
