Position Summary 

Responsible for responding to incidents on provincial highways. Incidents include traffic accidents, spills, and emergency situations which affect the highway and the safety of the travelling public, and other emergency situations within the right of way which affect the highway. Required to assist provincial and local police and emergency response services in incidents and accidents.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Serve as a primary liaison between provincial and local police, fire and various emergency responders during incident management 

  • Communicate with the Ministry of Transportation Traffic Operations Centre by 2-way radio and telephone to provide information and updates pertaining to incidents. 

  • Responsible for completing incident Reports 

  • Coordinate detour routes in the event of an asset (system or road) closure 

  • Conduct follow through investigation on all fatalities to determine if facilities contributed to the accident. (Confirm that all signs were properly posted, etc.) 

  • Track and maintain files on all major incidents and accidents involving assets, personnel and equipment within contract limitation. 

  • Assist with the administration of third party claims by gathering documentation, paperwork and other relevant information. 

  • Coordinate special events involving traffic control, detours and/or closures. 

  • Perform all other duties as assigned 

  • Avoids legal challenges by complying with federal, provincial and local legal requirements.

  • Minimum of 2 + years’ work experience in highway maintenance operations, freeway traffic control and incidents/accidents management. 

  • Valid Class DZ driver’s license is required with a good driving record to drive company vehicle. 

  • OTM BOOK 7 certification required 

  

Working Conditions/Physical Demands 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is routinely exposed to outside weather conditions including extreme heat and cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high precarious places; fume or airborne particles. Frequent exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, frequent exposure to insects and infrequent exposure to reptiles/rodents. We are seeking Snow Plow / Seasonal Equipment Operators for the seasonal time period of October – thru – April.

  • Traffic control setup and removal

  • Required to be available for emergency response rotations as needed for overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays. 

  • All other duties as assigned.

Responsible for efficient arrival to and recovery from incidents within the tunnel and roadway project while providing professional and courteous assistance to motorists.

3-5 years’ work experience with tow truck operations, preferably Freeway Service Patrol

CDL, DOT certifications, Freeway Service Patrol Certification, desired

Must possess or be able to complete CHP approved tow truck training course and continuing education

Possess basic mechanical aptitude, courteous and professional to customers, and friendly attitude

Documentation of actions and observations during response to and recovery from an incident

Ability to be trained as a Tunnel Operator

Current certificate of completion of a California Tow Truck Association (CTTA) Light Duty Level I and/or II is highly desirable.

This role completes winter operations by planning, organizing, and controlling projects; completing quality inspections; supervising sub-contractors and staff. The position reports to the Patrol Supervisor and Operations manager in the Supervisor's absence and will supervise crew in completing the project, ensuring safety and timely completion of tasks.

This position requires a highly developed sense of safety awareness and perceptive ability. You must have the ability to recognize hazards inherent in routine and non-routine tasks and make adjustments to avoid loss, injury or accident. You must be able to communicate with co-workers safety instructions. You must be able to think clearly and focus on your safety in your immediate surroundings, while using tools and equipment, while driving or operating equipment. You will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) appropriate to your job.

 

We are seeking Snow Plow / Seasonal Equipment Operators for the seasonal time period of October – thru – April.

For Winter Season – Removal of snow and ice by using snow removal and/or sanding equipment, including salting and other seasonal maintenance on roads, bridges, etc.

 

For Summer Season – this role will maintain and repair highway and other surfaces including signs, guardrails, fence, lighting, potholes, striping, adding or replacing reflectors, litter and debris removal

 

As Required

  • Traffic control setup and removal
  • Transport crew and equipment to work sites
  • Required to be available for emergency response rotations as needed for overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • All other duties as assigned.

  • Effectively communicate (in English); both orally and in writing with co-workers and supervisor.
  • Perform basic mathematical functions.
  • Consistently follow all policies and procedures.
  • Understand instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Must be capable of working in an environment in which demands and priorities change rapidly.
  • Work with hand and power tools, traffic control devices and mobile equipment such as tractors, graders, mowers, sweepers, augers and other types of equipment used for surface and right of way maintenance and repair.
