About us:

In 2016, the Commonwealth of Virginia selected a Cintra-led consortium to finance, design, build, operate and maintain the express lanes on Interstate 66 Outside the Beltway. The project will transform this critical Northern Virginia artery to relieve congestion, improve safety and provide more predictable travel times. The project corridor extends approximately 22 miles along Interstate 66 from the Capital Beltway (I-495) to Gainesville (US Route 29). Once completed, the project will include three toll-free general-purpose lanes in each direction and two express lanes in each direction with a state-of-the-art open-road electronic toll collection system. Expanded transit service, park-and-ride lots and interchange enhancements will further improve travel along I-66. The project will also connect several shared use paths to create more multimodal options. As an innovative and efficient public-private partnership, this project will be completed at a $2.5 billion net savings for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Job Description:

Your next calling:

As a Traffic Management Center (TMC) Operator you'll be responsible for monitoring the roadways including detecting, confirming, updating, and responding to scheduled and unscheduled traffic incidents, congestion, and monitoring of dynamic toll pricing on the I-66 Managed Lanes Project. The operator position serves as the eyes and ears of detection and management for all activities being handled by the TMC.

Functions key to success:

  • Serve as the point of contact for third parties requiring assistance on the I-66 Express Lanes Project (general public, VDOT, VDOT TMC, emergency responders, etc.), and dispatching incident support when needed.
  • Monitor CCTV from within the Traffic Management Center (TMC) and dispatch support personnel to remove abandoned vehicles, assist stranded motorists, and provide incident management support in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Assist to process and input data into the maintenance management system and generate monthly and quarterly reports.
  • Maintain an accurate record of events and log data.
  • Maintain multi-agency and public communications via various channels.
  • Provide real-time status of ongoing Traffic Management Center activities.
  • Maintain work orders for ITS equipment and log status updates.
  • Assist in the preparation of operating procedures and prepare data for reporting and trend analysis purposes​​​​​
  • Monitoring the roadways, including detecting, confirming, updating, and responding to scheduled and unscheduled traffic events and congestion with ITS devices such as CCTV, detectors, DMS, etc.
  • Perform routine equipment status checks and monitor equipment for potential operational problems.
  • Filing of hardcopies of logs, forms, records, correspondence, and documents and loading files in the electronic document management system.
  • Verification and monitoring of unplanned incidents, construction, special events and any other issue impacting traffic flow and/or motorist safety.
  • Completion of operational checklists and reports as applicable.
  • Document response and clearance times and other relevant information relating to incidents.
  • Attend training and staffing meetings as required.
  • Identify and escalate safety related issues.
  • Other administrative/support duties as assigned.

What you bring to the table:

You have worked hard to achieve success in your educational career, now put it to use. If you have a high school diploma or an Associate's degree from an accredited college/university in a transportation/technical field or directly related experience in a TMC environment, you are halfway there with the needed abilities for this position. Do you have understanding of ITS devices and assets and the ability to navigate current Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS)? If the answer is yes, you can check off another box.

  • Ability to interact with colleagues in a self-managed team structure.
  • Must be able to multitask, problem solve, and implement innovative processes within a fast-paced environment while remaining calm and effective under pressure.
  • Ability to coordinate real time activities and initiate immediate priorities, for self and support.
  • Good teamwork skills and active working attitude required.
  • Ability to work independently in carrying out the duties of the position.

Finally, in a technology-driven world, it is important to know your way around a computer. For this role, it will be important to know the basics of the following:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other software applications.
  • Understanding of basic computer functions and hardware components.
  • Strong, accurate data entry skills.
