DESCRIPTION
Reporting directly to the Head of the Geotechnical Department with Engineering Services and to the Design Manager at Project level, the Geotechnical Design Manager will:
- Manage a small team of Project Geotechnical Engineers during the Tender phase, the design phase and the construction phase.
- Support the conceptual design, engineering analysis, procurement and construction of major infrastructure projects, including but not limited to highways, bridges, tunnels, underground works and any other heavy civil works, from a geotechnical perspective.
- Supervision of technical work performed by others pertaining to solving geotechnical design problems and high-level review of design calculations
- Check and review routine geotechnical study proposals and reports prepared by others, including proposal for new field investigations during Tender phase or construction phase (geotechnical borings, field testing works, geophysical investigations, laboratory testing… etc)
- Review of specialized geotechnical reports (with special emphasis on roadway works), including but not limited to ground characterization, foundations of bridges or other minor structures, temporary support of excavations, required ground improvement, embankment and slope design, subgrade design under pavement, retaining wall design, sound wall foundation design, soil and rock reinforcement, design of underground excavations, etc.
- Analyze ground movement predictions, construction impact assessment reports, and strategies for mitigation of geotechnical risks.
- Propose and analyze instrumentation systems for monitoring ground movement and its implementation.
- Development of an schedule for all activities associated with geotechnical works, such as site investigations and geotechnical design deliverables
- At Project level, provide support to the design team led by the Design Manager; from tender/concept design through design basis and detailed design phases.
- Discuss with the Client / Owner and with the Designer’s geotechnical specialists on particular geotechnical topics. Support the collaborative efforts with all the parties to solve complex geotechnical issues, related to modeling, soil structure interaction, ground improvement, risk mitigation and other topics.
- Ensure all geotechnical designs are in accordance with the Ferrovial Group’s standards, the Contract requirements and the applicable geotechnical standards.
- Provide technical input to the Risk matrix for those risks of a geotechnical origin, as well as to other documents to be internally developed by Ferrovial at Project level during Tender stage.
- Ensure that geotechnical principles and analyses are appropriately understood and applied in the design, including those related to complex soil and structure interaction modelling.
- Review the work of more junior geotechnical engineers and specialized Consultants engaged in the project development, engineering and design.
- Support the efforts for creating analytical two and three-dimensional models and also FEM models, when necessary, under the direction from the Design Manager.
- Ensure that geotechnical inputs to the BOQ are precise, well defined, back-up is clearly explained, and there are no relevant concepts missing. Assist other departments when necessary to explain and address the rationale or fundamentals for such inputs.
- Support the negotiation of the geotechnical engineering fees, the definition of geotechnical scope of works and other related contractual issues with the Geotechnical Consultants.
- Support the Construction Technical Office, as applicable during the construction phase, for geotechnical related matters.
- At Project level, support the hiring process of other Geotechnical Engineers who may be required to be engaged during the Detailed Design phase as part of the design Team.

DESIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Master’s degree from an accredited university in geotechnical or civil engineering.
- 15+ years of experience in design management and expertise on complex civil infrastructure projects, including deep excavations, embankments, earthworks, subgrade, retaining walls, deep foundations, ground improvement, etc. More experience will be a plus.
- Previous experience with Alternative Delivery Projects (D&B Projects, P3 Projects).
- Ability to work in a fast-track, high-pressure construction environment.
- Professional Engineering License in GA or the goal to get the License within the first year.
- Project Management certification is desirable.
- Sound knowledge on ground (soil/rock) characterization, field exploration and laboratory testing methods.
- Skills in geotechnical and soil-structure modeling software (2D and 3D).
- Ability to work within the Engineering Services Team and within the Project Design Team with other colleagues.
- Assertive, with strong analytical and communication skills in English

We are now recruiting for a Track Specialist Design Manager to join the HS2 Track infrastructure project at the initial design phase which will run concurrently with the completion of main works contracts, which are now at their peak. Reporting to the Engineering Leadership, you’ll play a key role working closely with the Design and Delivery Teams, external design partners and Alliance members to develop and manage the design for Temporary Railheads, Resilient Track and Switches & Crossings (S&C). The role will be based either in either our London or Birmingham offices, and will require to attend weekly meetings with the broader team and/or client in Birmingham/London
Your mission
As a Design Manager, you will be responsible for the following:
- Establish and promote best practice in health, safety, sustainability, cost, time, buildability and appropriate quality matters.
- Manage the design process to ensure that the design solution developed for each element of the track is safe, efficient to build, compliant with the contract Specification and delivered to schedule within budget.
- Promote use of engineering expertise and modern methods of construction to add value to design development.
- Implement 3D design delivery strategy to inform and deliver the project BIM Execution Plan (BEP) requirements.
- Input into internal, client & external engineering workshops & steering groups.
- Perform reviews of technical proposals.

Who are we looking for?
Minimum Requirements for the Position
- Strong management skills, with a positive and collaborative approach

- Ability to work in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment
- Knowledge of the work process in design offices through successful experience of design delivery coordination
- A good commercial understanding of contracts, procurement routes and risk management.
- Good collaborative planning skills.
- Thorough understanding of 3D design and BIM, with a desire to drive improvements and benefits through embracing digital construction.
- Excellent communication skills, both at the personal level and more formal reporting level.

The Drainage Design Manager position requires a solid understanding of transportation projects, a strong foundation of hydrologic and hydraulics engineering principles, and solid communication skills. Work is this role requires extensive technical experience with additional limited management experience.
Duties:
- Reviews and documents design decisions, calculations, conclusions, and makes recommendations in reports, project documentation, letters, or memorandums;
- Conducts drainage analysis and design per the requirements of the project and VDOT;
- Oversees all aspects of the project development for the drainage discipline;
- Makes all decisions independently on engineering problems, methods, and project technical questions;
- Applies intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields;
- Requires the knowledge of and coordination with other related disciplines to achieve an overall compatible product;
- Reviews design engineers calculations and plans preparations; and
- Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications:
- B.S. in Civil Engineering or related degree program;
- 8+ years of experience in roadway, drainage design, and/or water resources;
- 4+ years of supervisory experience with accountability for individual and/or team results;
- Expert level knowledge in drainage design principals;
- Knowledge and experience with Microstation, InRoads and/or Geopak, and other applicable software common to the field of transportation engineering calculating quantities and developing cost estimates;
- Experience in designing highway drainage systems is a MUST;

- Responsible for coordinating and leading the design for the Calvert IMD (Buildings, railway elements and all other facilities), closely supervising the Designers and specialist design subcontractors/suppliers during the design, construction and handover of the works. Including integration of PW and any TW design stages, integration of design assurance and managing the delivery of the associated digital deliverables, in line with the construction and overall project programme, cost and client requirements.
- Responsible for the design deliverables for securing the Permanent Works consents (and its coordination with Temporary Works designs), and support obtaining such consents through engagement with the Stakeholders / Consenting team/individuals.
- Attending the weekly meetings with the construction team and broader design team and client in Birmingham, Calvert and/or London. Attending / chairing meetings for Calvert IMD design issues and manage their mitigation.
- Support and coordinate with the Calvert construction team any design issues, engaging with their key subcontractors and the Designers, as well with the suppliers in respect of fabrication designs.
- Support the client with identifying change, risk and opportunities and constantly striving for efficiencies and cost savings. Lead on the definition and assessment of optimizations and liaison with the commercial, planning, design delivery teams, and designers.
- Provide technical input and support to relevant commercial communications (SNCs, NCRs, CEs, Departures, etc.)
- Close liaison with the Engineering Director and the Track design lead and delivery directors, to ensure the integration of Contractor’s design, management of interfaces, and design delivery on time, optimized and in accordance with the Client’s requirements is essential.
- Lead the management of all interfaces (internal and external, including consenting as required) to ensure an integrated and constructible design, and evidencing the adequate interface management.
- Responsible for reviewing and reporting design delivery performance for the Calvert IMD (to include cost, programme, contract, scope, progress, change, compliance, governance etc.), in liaison and with support from the project controls and commercial teams.
- Manages the progressive delivery of technical assurance during design, construction and handover. Ensures compliance with the CDM Regulations.
Key skills and experience
- Degree in Civil Engineering / Railway Engineer /Architecture
- Understanding and knowledge of building codes and standards, zoning regulations, building construction, building systems and site requirements.
- Experience in managing railway depot designs; experience in managing large railway station buildings or other complex buildings
- Demonstrable knowledge of the application, principles, coordination of disciplines: architectural design, MEP and railway engineering.
- Experience in managing designers, managing liaison with third parties, stakeholders and other contractors.
- Very good communication and organizational skills

- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture from an accredited institution.
- Understanding and knowledge of building codes and standards, zoning regulations, building construction, building systems and site requirements.
- Experience in managing architectural design and construction.
- Demonstrable knowledge of the application, principles, theory and practice of architectural design and delivery.
- Good understanding of other building and engineering related disciplines such as MEP.
- Experience in managing and liaising with third parties and other contractors.
- Very good communication skills
- Focus on a sustainable design with reduced carbon emissions/BREEAM

Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for the geotechnical aspects for the HS2 Track Contract, including Calvert Depot. The track systems geotechnical works include piling and earthworks at Calvert as well as the checking of any geotechnical information hand overed from Main Works to Track systems contractor as well as assessing any geotechnical aspects coming from the Alliance.
- Responsible for analysing the hand over data from the Main Works for the frost protection layer as well as the subgrade for aspects such as heave, settlements and constructability geotechnical topics for our track.
- Manage and lead any geotechnical aspects related to Calvert depot, including piling works and earthworks movements in the site, providing the foundation required to the IMD building and railhead.
- Attending the weekly meetings with the construction team and broader design team and client in Birmingham, Calvert and/or London.
- Attending / chairing meetings for geotechnical issues such as Geohazards that become apparent during construction and provide technical support for their mitigation.
- Support the Client with identifying change, risk and opportunities and constantly striving for efficiencies and cost savings.
- Scope review of construction stage GI and surveys.
- Aid in the study of optimization and liaison with the commercial, planning, design delivery teams, and designers.
- Support the link and coordination with construction teams for management of geotechnical related issues.
- Provide technical input and support to relevant commercial communications (SNCs, NCRs, CEs, Departures, etc.).
- Close liaison with the Engineering Managers to ensure the delivery on time, optimized and in accordance with the Client’s requirements is essential.
- Close out geotechnical issue within area of responsibility in timely manner.
- Review of monitoring reports and certificates. Support progressive technical assurance during design, construction and handover process.
Key skills and experience
- Degree in Geotechnical or Civil Engineering
- Knowledge of key aspects of geotechnical design and construction methodology
- Knowledge of settlement and heave analysis on tracks, Rayleigh waves and associated mitigation measures
- Good knowledge of relevant geotechnical standards and their applicability for design construction.
- Experience in piling design/construction
- Experience in pile testing and interpretation
- Experience in managing and liaising with third parties and other contractors
- Very good communication skills

Our H7 framework spans from airfield works (taxiways, runways, stands), to civils (roads, demolition works, underground and above ground structures), and MEP packages (services tunnels, lifts, life safety systems, fuel/fire mains).
The role
The Design engineer will report directly to the Design Manager and will work closely with the Project Manager, and liaise with the Client, Design Consultants and relevant stakeholders in all matters related to Design and Engineering. You will ensure design is delivered on time and on budget, and comply with the required Quality, Health, Safety and Wellbeing and Sustainability standards and requirements. You will also manage the design Contract, including design changes, risk and opportunities. This is an exciting opportunity to use new technologies, tools and software in the construction industry to bring innovation to the project.
Key Responsibilities
- Tendering design packages from project briefs received by the Client – understand scope and negotiate offers upstream and downstream.
- Agree Design Responsibility Matrix with all parties with design input in the project to ensure no gaps or overlaps.
- Co-ordinate the design team activities to ensure that the project design is completed on budget in line with the cost plan and on time in line with the agreed construction programme.
- Monitor and track progress of the design, manage any slippages and be the interface with the management team.
- Actively define and manage design interfaces.
- Lead the review of the design with the interested parties.
- Promote, explore, and materialise value engineering opportunities throughout the design process.
- Work with the procurement team to ensure compliance with financial parameters and assist in defining scopes for subcontracting the different works packages.
- Be responsible for ensuring the design complies with health, safety, environmental and quality requirements.
- Work with the Health and Safety, Quality and Environmental teams to support audits to consultants.
- Liaise with client representatives on the design development as required.
- Review and agree Consultants monthly Applications for payment.
- Assist the Design Manager on the management of the design team, giving advice on appropriate resourcing levels, effective performance management, employee development and motivation.
- Promote company values in all dealing with other employees, clients, subcontractors, and other external contacts.
